Clemens August Ferdinand von Galen zu Assen (born June 14, 1720 in Herdringen , † September 24, 1747 in Clemenswerth ) was chamberlain and canon in the prince-bishopric of Münster .

Life

Origin and family

The ancient Westphalian noble family von Galen is one of the most important families in the Principality of Münster , from which numerous important and well-known personalities have emerged. In the 16th century it partially sympathized with the  Reformation , but later became Catholic again  . Clemens August Ferdinand von Galen was born as the son of Wilhelm Ferdinand von Galen and his wife Reichsfreiin Maria Henrica von Fürstenberg zu Herdringen (1696–1742). After her death, his father married Sophie Louise von Merveldt zu Westerwinkel (1730-1810) in Münster on February 10, 1748 . From this marriage the children Clemens August Josef (* 1748) and Maria (* 1752, ∞ Maximilian von Ketteler ) emerged. Clemens August was only 27 years old and was buried in the family crypt in Dinklage .

Career and work

With the receipt of the tonsure on November 10, 1727, Clemens August Ferdinand was prepared for a clerical position and at the end of the year received the Galen family praise in Münster , which his deceased uncle Ferdinand Benedikt owned . In mid-January 1728 he received the first Galen family praise in Minden . Before he began studying in Salzburg and Italy, he was a canon in Dülmen and vicar at the cathedral in Münster . On December 12, 1740 he was appointed chamberlain . In May 1742 he enrolled at a university in Paris.
