The Spengler Cup 1923 ( French Coupe Spengler 1923 ) was the first edition of the competition of the same name and took place from December 28 to January 1, 1924 in the Swiss climatic health resort of Davos . Due to heavy snowfall, the last tournament game was played on New Years Day 1924. The tournament was won by the University of Oxford team.

background

After the First World War, Austria and Germany were excluded from international ice hockey competitions organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The Davos resident Dr. Carl Spengler wanted to restore contacts between the nations involved in the First World War. He donated a trophy and invited four teams to this first edition: the University of Oxford from England , the Berlin Ice Skating Club from Germany, the Vienna Ice Skating Club from Austria and the host, HC Davos .
