The Spengler Cup 2009 ( French Coupe Spengler 2009 ) was the 83rd edition of the competition of the same name and took place from December 26th to 31st, 2009 in the Swiss climatic health resort of Davos . The local Vaillant Arena acted as the venue . A total of 70,882 spectators attended the eleven tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 6,443 per game.

It was won by the Belarusian club HK Dinamo Minsk , who won the tournament with a 3-1 victory in the final over the hosts HC Davos . In the qualification, the Swiss had just won the game 3-2. For Dinamo Minsk it was the first ever victory in the Spengler Cup when it took part. It was also the first victory for a team from Belarus and the first for a club from a former Soviet republic . The best result so far was a second place for Sokol Kiev from the then Ukrainian SSR in 1986 .

The Ukrainian Serhiy Varlamow in the service of the winner HK Dinamo Minsk was the most successful player in the tournament with nine points , including two goals.

The 83rd edition of the traditional tournament marked the end of an era, as it was the last time the game was played in the usual mode since 1986 with a five-team qualification followed by a final. The introduction of the round of five even dates back to 1958 and looks back on a tradition spanning over 50 years.

mode

The five participating teams initially played in a single round in the " everyone against everyone " mode , so that each team played four games. The two teams with the best points after completing the ten qualifying games finally determined the tournament winner in an additional game.
