Mario Scalzo (* 11. November 1984 in Saint-Hubert , Quebec ) is a German ice hockey player with Italo - Canadian origin, in June 2020 the Eispiraten Crimmitschau from the DEL2 under contract.
Career
The 1.80 m tall defender played in his youth for the Tigres de Victoriaville and L'Océanic de Rimouski in the Canadian junior league Québec Major Junior Hockey League before he signed his first professional contract in 2005. For the Iowa Stars , Scalzo was two and a half years in the American Hockey League on the ice and then moved to league rivals Norfolk Admirals , where he played the 2007/08 season to an end.
In the summer of 2008, the Italian-Canadian signed a contract with the Austrian champions EC Red Bull Salzburg , with whom he again reached the final of the Austrian championship . After one season, Mario Scalzo left Salzburg for Adler Mannheim from the German Ice Hockey League .
In April 2011, Scalzo signed a contract for one year in the EHC Biel from the National League A . After falling out with head coach Kevin Schläpfer , his contract was terminated on October 3, 2011. He then received a short-term contract for a total of six games with SC Bern before signing a season contract with TPS Turku from the SM-liiga . In October 2012, the Graz 99ers signed a trial contract, which was later extended until the end of the season. On May 23, 2014 the Piráti Chomutov committed from the second Czech league Scalzo, with whom he won the championship of the first division at the end of the season.
In the following years he stopped playing professional games several times, moved to Speyer with his wife and worked in his in-laws' company. In August 2019, he initially received a trial contract with the Kassel Huskies from the DEL2 , but injured himself while preparing for the season. In December 2019 he received German citizenship and made his debut for the Kassel Huskies in the DEL2 a little later.
In June 2020 he was signed by the Crimmitschau ice pirates , where he meets his former trainer Mario Richer .
International
Scalzo took part in the 2011 World Cup as a member of the Canadian national team. He was on the ice in three games and made two assists.
