The 2004/05 LHJMQ season was the 36th season of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . During the regular season , the 16 teams in the league played 70 games each. The Rimouski Océanic , the team with the highest points in the regular season, won the second Coupe du Président in history with a sweep in the play-off final against the Halifax Mooseheads .

The outstanding player of the season was star striker Sidney Crosby from the Rimouski Océanic, who ended both the regular season and the play-offs as the most successful points collector in the league and won numerous individual trophies.

Entry Draft

Before the start of the season , the annual LHJMQ Entry Draft took place on June 5, 2004 in the Center Henry-Leonard , the home ground of Baie-Comeau Drakkar , in which the teams were able to secure the rights to available junior players. The first to be elected at the event was James Sheppard , selected by the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles . This was followed by defenders in second and third place with Alex Lamontagne and Jason Legault , before Benjamin Breault and Pier-Alexandre Poulin were selected as the first center forward. The Lewiston MAINEiacs decided to use their first round voting rights, in eighth position, to select goalkeeper Jonathan Bernier .

The talent draw was held in 15 rounds, with the teams acquired the rights to a total of 233 players. A total of seven voting rights remained unused; one in the 13th round, two in round 14 and four in the last round.

Regular season

At the season opener on September 16, 2004, the reigning Coupe-du-Président winner Gatineau Olympiques met the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in front of 2528 spectators in the Robert Guertin Center . The home team prevailed 6-4 , with winger Guillaume Labrecque scoring the first goal of the season.

The Rimouski Océanic set a new league record in the course of the season with 28 games in a row without defeat. The team remained undefeated from January 7th to March 20th, 2005, with 26 games ending victorious during this period. In addition to the first row of attacks around Sidney Crosby , Marc-Antoine Pouliot and Dany Roussin , defender Patrick Coulombe and all-star defender Mario Scalzo , who had only recently been transferred from the Victoriaville Tigres to Rimouski, played a key role in this success . In the play-offs, the team won another seven games in a row and marked another league record with a record number of 35 games in a row without defeat.
