The 2012/13 season of the Austrian Ice Hockey League began on September 6, 2012 and ended on April 5, 2013. The defending champion was EHC Linz , who was eliminated in the semi-finals. The new champion was the thirtieth time in the club's history of the EC KAC , which defeated the Vienna Capitals in a sweep in the final.

Shortly after the end of the previous championship, HC Innsbruck , which was already active in the top division up to the 2008/09 season , considered applying for promotion after winning the National League . The ÖEHV had previously rejected Innsbruck's application to switch to the Italian A1 series , which would have been easier to finance thanks to lower budgets. The HCI published an open letter on this, but the ÖEHV argued that there were too few ice hockey clubs in Austria that could finance the sport on a professional level. As a result, the board of HC Innsbruck decided in May to apply for promotion back to the EBEL. This was complied with at the league meeting in Klagenfurt.

In addition to the Tyroleans, the Vorarlberg Club Dornbirner EC also decided to venture into the top division. For the first time in over ten years, eight Austrian clubs took part in the country's top division.

At the beginning of April it was also announced that the German second division Landshut Cannibals was considering joining. The Germans also had the option to purchase the Hannover Scorpions' DEL license for two million euros , but this was reportedly too expensive for the club. The project of the Cannibals evoked memories of the procedure of the EHC Munich , which two years earlier used the possible EBEL entry as a means of pressure against the DEL, and the project ultimately fizzled out.

The Slovak club ŠHK 37 Piešťany had also speculated that it would participate in the EBEL and had already submitted an application for membership, but the Slovak association refused to approve the project.

HK Jesenice

The situation at HK Jesenice had already become critical in the preseason. Several times players left the indebted club, which had to end the season with a rump squad and took last place. In the meantime, a fan fundraising campaign had been launched, but it hardly helped. Therefore, at the end of the basic round of the 2011/12 season, everything looked like the Slovenes would leave. This came true in May; at the league meeting at the end of the new season it was agreed that the Slovenes should take a break of several years in order to consolidate financially.

However, the association was unable to cope financially and announced its dissolution on August 31, 2012.

Farm teams

After the Austrian EBEL clubs had run farm teams in the Oberliga or National League for the past two years and the results were rather mixed, there were plans to set up an EBEL-internal youth league at the turn of 2012, with EBEL for all -Clubs, regardless of their nationality, participation should be compulsory. This project became the Erste Bank Young Stars League , which finally started playing with fourteen teams in parallel to the 2012/13 EBEL season.

The following supranational youth league has been organized by Erste Bank Eishockey Liga since this season:

Mode and regulations

The mode remained practically unchanged compared to the previous year. In the basic round, a double round trip is played, which results in 44 games per team. This is followed by a placement round for the teams in places one to six and a qualifying round for the remaining six teams for the last two playoff places.

The post-season will then be played with quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals, whereby in the first round the three best-placed teams can choose their opponents from the table below.

Transfers

The Salzburg team underwent a complete overhaul in the off-season, which numerous former top performers had to give way. With Ryan Glenn a new defender was signed. Likewise returned Ryan Duncan after a year with the Portland Pirates back to the Salzach. The league rivals Zagreb ( Ryan Kinasewich ) and Linz ( Justin Keller ) signed two of the league's top strikers. In addition, several players were signed in the course of the lockout (see below).
With Fabian Weinhandl the former goalkeeper of the Graz 99ers was signed. In addition, defender Adrian Veideman , who had become champion with EHC Linz last year, was won over. Jamie Fraser came from Ljubljana, Zdenek Blatny was also taken over by the 99ers. As a supplement to Weinhandl, Matthew Zaba was brought to Vienna by the Italian first division club HC Bozen .
The most important change at VSV took place in the coaching position, where the Finn Hannu Järvenpää was brought in by league competitor Olimpija Ljubljana. Bernhard Starkbaum could initially be kept in the goalkeeping position with an exit clause for abroad, but a short time later he made use of this and left the club to work for MODO Hockey in Sweden. His backup Marco Wieser returned overseas and was replaced by Thomas Höneckl from Salzburg. Most of the transfer card players were also replaced, with coach Järvenpää mainly using players from Ljubljana. Antti Pusa came to the Drava from HK Jesenice.
At the EC KAC veteran Christoph Brandner ended his career. Striker Dieter Kalt also left the club three years after returning home. Last year's newcomers Joey Tenute and Andrei Sjusin ended their guest appearances, instead two new strikers were signed with Jamie Lundmark and Patrick Harand . The contract with coach Christian Weber , who had taken over from Manny Viveiros during the preseason , was extended by three years. During the season, in addition to some lockout players (see below), defender Florian Iberer and Tomislav Zanoški , the latter from league rivals Zagreb, were signed.
The Linz master squad remained essentially unchanged. Defenders Adrian Veideman (to the Vienna Capitals) and Jan-Axel Alavaara ( retired ) were replaced by Marc-André Dorion and Andrew Hedlund , striker Justin Keller (to the Red Bulls Salzburg) by Brett Engelhardt . In addition, the young players Bernhard Fechtig (from EC Dornbirn) and Kevin Macierzynski (from VEU Feldkirch) could be signed.
In the Laibach family, bloodletting followed after the preseason. League top scorer John Hughes left the club as did goalkeeper Jean-Philippe Lamoureux . Scott Hotham , Brad Cole and Justin Taylor followed coach Hannu Järvenpää to EC VSV. As a replacement, the new coach Heikki Mälkiä , who had come from local rivals HK Jesenice, signed several young players from overseas with Chris D'Alvise , Simon Ferguson , Scott Freeman , Alexandre Imbeault , Michael Ratchuk and Andrew Thomas .
The Croatians let go of one of their best strikers, Greg Day , and replaced him with Alex Leavitt , who had played for the Finnish club Hämeenlinnan Pallokerho the year before . For this purpose, Nathan Perkovich was brought to Croatia by the Albany Devils . This should also compensate for the departure of Ryan Kinasewich , who moved to Salzburg. The successful goalkeeper duo of Robert Kristan and Michael Ouzas could be held.
The Graz 99ers extended the contract of goalkeeper Frédéric Cloutier and let Fabian Weinhandl move, who moved to the Capitals, of which Sebastian Stefaniszin was signed as backup and defender Martin Oraže . With Greg Day , a striker was brought back who, after several years in Graz, had now played for Zagreb for two years. In addition, there was another former Zagreb resident, Andy Delmore . After several years in Germany, Bob Wren also returned to Austria, who had once formed a successful striker duo with Mike Craig at the Vienna team. With Olivier Labelle from the ECHL Club Reading Royals , the storm ranks were reinforced.
There were few changes in the squad of the only Hungarian EBEL club, where striker István Sofron was courted by many foreign clubs, but ultimately fulfilled his contract. Derek Ryan switched to VSV after the successful preseason. Frank Banham was brought from Ljubljana to compensate . Two new strikers were also added, Kyle Bailey and Tyler Metcalfe .
The Vorarlbergers built their squad from scratch due to the promotion. Patrick DesRochers joined a tribe of young players as goalkeeper alongside Hannes Enzenhofer , who returned to the first division. In addition, Scott Aarsen , Jonathan D'Aversa , Olivier Magnan , Luciano Aquino , Michael Henrich , Andrew Kozek , Clark MacLean , Logan MacMillan and Dale Mitchell were a number of mostly young legionaries. Danny Bois (formerly Salzburg) and John Hecimovic (Zagreb) already had EBEL experience.
The Znaimer let go of the striker Mike Danton , who had signed up during the previous season . Newly arrived with Burke Henry a EBEL experienced defenders. In addition, Kyle Wharton , Kim Strömberg and Ondřej Fiala joined other new players.
At HC Innsbruck, the contracts of some young players from the national league team were extended. In the goalkeeping position, Patrick Machreich and the Italian national goalkeeper Thomas Tragust were able to sign a balanced team. With Craig Switzer , Francis Lemieux , Bryan McGregor , Mike Bartlett , Antonin Manavian and the league veteran Aaron Fox , new legionaries joined the team. In addition, Jon Insana could be signed by the Capitals.

Basic round

Main round

First first round (rounds 1 to 11)

The amphitheater in Pula, the venue for two outdoor games.

With the opening round on September 6th, the league started the new season earlier than ever before. Right from the start, the EC VSV attracted attention and topped the table with sovereign performances. The team proved to be outstanding offensively as well as defensively and decided games against designated favorites, some with clear results. This run was slowed down in the meantime when goalkeeper Jean-Philippe Lamoureux was banned for five games after an assault against a referee and his backup Thomas Höneckl turned out to be insufficient .

The Vienna Capitals, which together with KHL Medveščak Zagreb established themselves as the first pursuers of the Villachers, also presented themselves well after the botched preseason. EC Dornbirn turned out to be a worthy new addition and was able to prove its level despite many defeats. In contrast, HC Innsbruck made a name for itself in negative terms, as the team had the worst start to the season since the EBEL was founded and was already in last place after a few games. With an average of more than five goals conceded per game, the team also showed the worst defensive performance in the EBEL history.

In negative terms, the EC Red Bull Salzburg made headlines, where even coach Pierre Pagé was shaken in the meantime . The team was inconsistent and especially weak defensively; internal quarrels also weakened the team. Goalkeeper Alex Auld has been sacked and has since been replaced by Bernd Brückler . It was similar for champions Linz, where despite the only slightly changed squad, many defeats were recorded, some with a striking number of goals conceded. The Linzers reacted by firing their long-time regular goalkeeper Alex Westlund and replacing them with the EBEL-experienced David LeNeveu .

The league received special attention right from the start with two open-air games organized by KHL Medveščak Zagreb in the Pula amphitheater . HDD Ljubljana and Vienna Capitals competed against the Croatians in the historic arena, which was also reported in the international press.

Two coach changes were also reported relatively shortly after the start of the season. In Ljubljana Heikki Mälkiä was sacked after just a few games and replaced by assistant coach Bojan Zajc . At Székesfehérvár, Kevin Primeau's contract was dissolved and the Czech Jan Neliba took over his post.

On the transfer market, the lockout in the National Hockey League was the main beneficiary (see also transfers ). In particular, Thomas Vanek's guest appearance at the 99ers received a lot of media attention and brought the club a significant increase in viewers. In the course of the lockout, the league also extended the transfer deadline.

First second half of the season (rounds 12 to 22)

In the second quarter of the basic round, some developments not expected before the season became apparent. Alba Volán Székesfehérvár and Orli Znojmo were able to orient themselves further up in the table, while the EC KAC slipped into the lower half of the table. The club from Klagenfurt, who had up to eleven injured players in the meantime, struggled with a poor scoring, which could not be compensated for by signing three lockout players, namely Tyler Myers , Sam Gagner and Andrew Cogliano .

The EC Red Bull Salzburg had problems especially on the defensive and also attracted attention with a lively transfer activity; Here, too, several lockout players were signed with Johnny Boychuk , Derick Brassard and Derek Dorsett in addition to Rob Schremp (most recently in the KHL). A similar defensive weakness ended the run of the EC VSV, which quickly slipped into the middle of the table. With Antti Pusa , a player of the club made headlines off the ice after mistaking an apartment door while drunk.

In the meantime, Zagreb topped the EBEL table for the first time. The league also benefited from the annual Arena Ice Fever organized by the Croatians, during which the club held a series of matches in the 15,000-seat arena in Zagreb .

The newcomers to the league, Dornbirn and Innsbruck, continued to struggle with the league's level, which was significantly higher than that of the national league. HC Innsbruck slipped into several major defeats in which the class difference was clearly recognizable.

Master Linz stabilized his performance after the goalkeeper change and, thanks to improved consistency, came closer to the top half of the table. Ljubljana missed the latter, however, and surprisingly continued to win against much stronger opponents, while the team lost games to be regarded as mandatory victories.

The Capitals, meanwhile, benefited from an excellent defense and consolidated their place among the top teams in the league.

Second first round (rounds 23 to 33)

In the third first half of the season there was a showdown between the two top teams, Zagreb and Vienna, for the interim table lead, which the Viennese won. The team around coach Samuelsson drew attention in particular with a strong defense work. With an average of just over two goals conceded per game, she had the best defensive work in EBEL history. On the other hand, HC Innsbruck had to accept just under five goals per game, making it the worst newcomer since Székesfehérvár in the 2007/08 season.

The middle of the table remained close together, with the EC VSV now completing the group; the club had lost contact with the top trio due to several defeats, while Salzburg were able to approach from below. After the HDD Ljubljana there was still a gap to the two newcomers to the league, whereby the EC Dornbirn was able to hold its own better than the Innsbruck team.

In the course of the end of the try-out period, some changes were made in the squads. The EC KAC dismissed Cogliano and instead signed defender Florian Iberer and striker Tomislav Zanoški from league rivals Zagreb. EHC Linz brought a lockout player on board with Shawn Matthias , while Capitals striker Justin Keller took over from Salzburg. Dornbirn parted ways with Christoph Harand and Michael Lebler .

The EC Red Bull Salzburg had to struggle with image problems. After Derick Brassard left the club without consulting, its manager Allan Walsh caused a sensation in the media with the statement that there was "no more unprofessional club in Europe than Red Bull Salzburg." The club is also spreading falsehoods to justify the departure of the NHL players in front of fans and the media, he continued. Salzburg responded by announcing the exhaustion of all legal remedies for the breach of contract.

A no less embarrassing faux pas happened to the EC KAC, where just before Christmas, due to poor communication with press representatives, some formats had already announced the replacement of coach Christian Weber. The management of the association corrected this, but it triggered heated discussions about the composition and behavior of the executive committee.

There were also two double-digit victories in the third first half of the season: EC VSV defeated the bears from Zagreb 11-2 at home, while EC Red Bull Salzburg achieved a 12-3 home win against the newcomer from Dornbirn.

Second round (rounds 34 to 44)

The last phase of the preliminary round brought some changes in the table. While the ranking of the four best teams remained unchanged, Alba Volán Székesfehérvár slipped into the lower tableau. The EC KAC, who had meanwhile replaced coach Christian Weber and replaced by Christer Olsson , was able to get into the top half of the table thanks to a sovereign winning streak. In midfield, the EHC Linz and Orli Znojmo fought for the last remaining place in the placement round, with the Upper Austrians finally prevailing.

EC Red Bull Salzburg had already missed the fixed playoff qualification a few laps before the end and continued to struggle with inconsistent performances. At the same time it was announced that head coach Pierre Page would act as sports director of the two Red Bull teams in Salzburg and Munich. These reports also raised concerns about the future importance of the location in Austria.

At the bottom of the table, the newcomers from Dornbirn and Innsbruck remained, with the former in particular attracting attention with good performances.

Placement round

In the placement round, champions EHC Linz proved to be the strongest team that could win eight of their ten matches. The Vienna Capitals were only able to secure first place in the table with a shootout victory over the EC KAC on the last matchday. The EC KAC achieved third place and thus also overtook Medveščak Zagreb, whose intermediate round balance was negative. The Graz 99ers and EC VSV landed at the bottom of the table, both losing seven out of ten games.

Qualifying round

In the qualifying round, HC Orli Znojmo quickly set itself apart from the rest of the participants and ultimately had the same result as EHC Linz, the best team in the placement round, with a record of 8-2 wins. The second playoff place was held at the beginning of the HDD Olimpija Ljubljana, while Salzburg as the favorite showed mixed performances; Only after the national team break (Olympic qualification) were Salzburg able to improve and finally secure second place.

As expected, the two newcomers from Dornbirn and Innsbruck only played a minor role. Székesfehérvár was also unable to maintain the relatively good form from the main round and ended up in eleventh place overall.

Playoffs

Selection of opponents for the quarter-finals

For the first time this season, the three best-placed teams, following the Swedish example, had a right to vote for their respective opponents in the quarter-finals. The election took place live on Servus TV immediately after the last games of the regular round , where representatives of Vienna Capitals, EHC Linz and EC KAC announced their decisions. With the EC Red Bull Salzburg, Zagreb received the last remaining team as opponents.

Quarter finals

  • Vienna Capitals (1) - HC Orli Znojmo (7): Final score 4: 1
Season record: 4 games in the regular season, 4 wins for the Capitals, goal difference: 14: 7
The series between the round winner and the first in the qualifying round started under clear signs due to the season balance. The Capitals clearly won the first two encounters; Only in the third game could the Czechs win against the Viennese - on foreign ice - for the first time. However, the Capitals continued to increase and did not allow any more goals in the last two games. Game four in particular turned into a debacle for Znojmo when the Capitals scored away at will. In the all-important final game, the Viennese then won confidently and thus secured a place in the semi-finals.
  • EHC Linz (2) - EC VSV (6): Final score 4: 3
Season record: 6 games in the regular round and placement round, 3: 3 wins, goal difference: 19:21
The decision of the EHC Linz to choose the VSV as a quarter-final opponent met with great incomprehension, especially among their own fans, mainly due to the incomparably better record against the Graz 99ers. In the very first game, the Linz team lost on their own ice. Although they were able to win the next three matches, three of them away, but in contrast to Znojmo, the VSV kept the chance alive with fighting strong performances and was able to equalize in the series in the meantime, but ultimately the Linz asserted themselves in the series.
  • EC KAC (3) - EC Graz 99ers (5): Final score 4: 1
Season record: 6 games in the regular season and placement round, 4: 2, goal difference: 20:17
Similar to the series of the Capitals against Znojmo, although less clearly, the EC KAC was also traded as a favorite in its series against the 99ers. After a narrow defeat in game one, Graz showed their team strength in the second encounter and showed with a sovereign 5-1 home win that the balance of power was by no means so clear. In this game, KAC coach Christer Olsson replaced goalkeeper Andy Chiodo with his backup René Swette , who from that moment on was number one. With Swette in the goal, the revenge with the same result on his own ice and then a 3-0 shutout success in Graz. The team from Graz kept the decisive fifth game open for a long time, but towards the end the KAC secured the semi-final ticket with a 5-2 win including an empty net hit.
  • KHL Medveščak Zagreb (4) - EC Red Bull Salzburg (8): Final score 2: 4
Season record: 4 games in the regular season, 2: 2 wins, goal difference: 9: 5
The series between Zagreb and Salzburg was considered the most even of the quarter-finals before the start of the playoff, and in fact three of the six games were only decided in overtime. What was striking about the series was a high level of illegal actions, which also led to bans. Already in game two there was a scandal when Daniel Welser rammed the Zagreb goalkeeper, Robert Kristan , whereupon he was injured and retired. Only a little later, Kyle Greentree returned the favor to the Salzburg goalkeeper Bernd Brückler . In the aftermath, too, the pace remained rough at times. Salzburg finally prevailed in the series thanks to physical advantages; the three extensions all went to the people of Mozartstadt.

Semifinals

  • Vienna Capitals (1) - EC Red Bull Salzburg (8): Final score 4: 2
Season record: 4 games in the regular season, 2-2 wins, goal difference: 12:12
The semi-final series of the Capitals against Salzburg was a specialty for statistical reasons: the match had already been played five times since the EBEL was founded in 2003, with the Salzburg team having the better end for themselves in all cases. For the first time, however, the Red Bulls did not start as favorites in the series. Already in the first game the Capitals celebrated a clear victory 6-2. In the meantime, however, Salzburg turned the series with game three. The Slovenian goalkeeper Luka Gračnar , who had already made a name for himself with good performances in the regular season , was also responsible for the two victories . However, the Capitals regained home rights with an away win and used the matchpuck to win a series in game six on foreign ice. For Pierre Pagé , the 2-4 defeat was also the last game as Salzburg coach.
  • EHC Linz (2) - EC KAC (3): Final score 2: 4
Season record: 6 games in the regular round and placement round, 2: 4 wins, goal difference: 17:14
The second semi-final match was the remake of the previous year's final. The series corresponded to the forecasts up to the fourth game and was characterized by close results and home wins. It was only in game five that the EC KAC managed to break with a 3-2 win on Linz ice. With the subsequent home win, the Klagenfurt team decided the semi-finals for themselves and were in the final for the third time in a row.

final

The final series represented the new edition of the final from the 2004/05 season , when the Capitals also dominated the season and went into the final series as favorites. The duel also meant the encounter between the only two Swedish coaches in the league: Christer Olsson on the side of the EC KAC and Tommy Samuelsson on the side of the Capitals. The favorite role of the Viennese was based not only on the table position but also on the direct season balance, which the Capitals had clearly won with 5: 1 wins.

The final began with a narrow 1-0 away win for EC KAC on foreign ice and continued with a 2-1 overtime win in Klagenfurt. At this point, due to the good defensive performance of both teams and the top form goalkeepers Matt Zaba (Vienna) and René Swette (KAC), a close series of goals with few goals was already emerging. Only in game three did both clubs show more offensive efforts, with the EC KAC remaining the more successful team. The Carinthians get four goals in the first half of the game. The last third was marked by the vain efforts of the Viennese, although René Swette had the happier end for himself and was able to book the second shutout in the third final game. The two games were also the first since the above-mentioned final series (game three, 0: 5 by the EC KAC on April 3, 2005), in which the Viennese were on their own ice without scoring.

In the decisive fourth game, the Capitals managed to take the lead for the first time in the series. After the intermittent 2-0, Tyler Scofield scored the following goal with a penalty shot. A double hit in the middle section turned the result in favor of the EC KAC. In the final phase, the Capitals scored the 4: 3 with six field players. Jamie Lundmark , who had recently been elected MVP, made the final score with an empty net hit.

Klagenfurt achieved the first sweep in a final since the EBEL was founded and the first final sweep in Austrian league history with a distance of best-of-seven . At the same time, the club won the thirtieth ÖEHL championship title in the club's history.
