Matthew "Matt" Zaba (born July 14, 1983 in Yorkton , Saskatchewan ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who was active in Europe for HC Bozen and the Vienna Capitals in the multinational EBEL .
Career
Matt Zaba began his junior career with the Yorkton Mallers, Penticton Panthers and the Vernon Vipers. Between 2003 and 2007 he played successfully for Colorado College in the WCHA and was elected to the league's all-rookie team in 2004. He was previously selected during the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings , who later gave his rights to the New York Rangers .
After finishing college, Zaba played for the Charlotte Checkers and Idaho Steelheads in the ECHL before the Rangers brought him to their farm team, the Hartford Wolf Pack from the American Hockey League , in 2008 . He then played more than 70 AHL games at Wolf Pack and was named goalkeeper of the month in February 2009. In January 2010, Zaba even came to an NHL mission for the Rangers.
In the summer of 2010, after his contract with the Rangers had expired, Zaba switched to the first Italian league for HC Bozen and completed two very successful seasons with the South Tyroleans, which culminated in the 2012 championship . Due to this success and the achievements shown, other European clubs became aware of Zaba and Zaba decided on an offer from Vienna Capitals from the multinational EBEL . Due to knee problems and subsequent hip surgery, Zaba ended his career as an ice hockey goalkeeper in 2015. He then became a goalkeeping coach at the Colorado Rampage Hockey Club .
