The Erste Bank Young Stars League ( EBYSL for short ) is the highest junior league in Austrian ice hockey and has existed since the 2012/13 season. It is a joint project of the teams involved in the Austrian ice hockey league (Erste Bank Eishockey Liga). Like the EBEL, it is an international championship with clubs from Austria , Slovenia , Hungary and the Czech Republic . It replaces the national U-20 championship of the Austrian ice hockey association that had been held until then .

history

The Erste Bank Young Stars League is a direct result of the increased efforts by the EBEL clubs to promote young talent. The teams of the league had already sent farm teams in the lower performance levels into the race in the years before, but the results were mostly mixed. At the beginning of 2012, considerations were made for the first time to create a separate league, which was quickly put into practice; the EBYSL started operations for the next season. In the following year, a separate U18 league was established - the Erst Bank Juniors League (EBJL).

Field of participants

Participation is compulsory for all EBEL clubs. Only the Dornbirner EC and HC Bozen received an exception permit for the EBEL not to have to provide a team in the first season with regard to the build-up of the squad. The EC Red Bull Salzburg founded a syndicate with the second division club EK Zell am See , since the organization and its youth teams are also active in many international competitions (including in the Czech Republic).

The Lower Austria Stars were represented by two teams in the first season; in the future it will only be one. The team is the combat team of the St. Pölten-based Okanagan Hockey Academy Europe , which also has academy status. It is an offshoot of the Okanagan Hockey School from Penticton ( British Columbia , Canada ), which was founded in 1963 and was founded in 2008 .

At the beginning of the foreign teams there was also a team represented with the HD mladi Jesenice , which had no counterpart in the EBEL. The HK Jesenice ceased its gaming operations in the summer of 2012 for financial reasons. The EBYSL team was an independent club that was originally founded purely as a youth club and was intended to help rebuild the traditional Slovenian ice hockey location; however, the team only played one season.

Instead, two more Hungarian teams were added for the 2013/14 season.

Playing times

2012/13 season

The game was played with fourteen teams in two groups. After a simple round-trip round within the group and another, which was played across the league, the teams placed last were eliminated, while the remaining teams played another round-trip round. The two best-placed clubs from both groups qualified for the playoffs, which were held as the best-of-three series in the semifinals and finals.

After the basic round, the two groups were led by SAPA Fehérvár AV19 and HDD Olimpija Ljubljana. Since no Austrian teams followed in second place either, in addition to the league playoffs, a series for the Austrian U20 championship title was played out, which the LLZ Süd / Graz 99ers was able to win against the EC KAC. In the league playoffs, the Hungarian team SAPA Fehérvár AV19 prevailed against the Czech team Orli Znojmo and won the first championship title.
