Participating teams

The field of participants remained unchanged, although there were long-lasting uncertainties in the summer of 2014 about HC Bozen's remaining in the league. The defending champion reported financial problems and was looking for new sponsors to secure funding for the season. Participation was not fixed until July 2014.

mode

The basic mode with main round (double round trip), intermediate round (playoff race) and playoffs remained unchanged, but changes were made in detail. The main game days are Friday and Sunday (1 game is broadcast by ServusTV). Thursday is a live game (broadcast by laola1.tv). Another game day is Saturday as part of the road trip (RT). The team plays on the road trip on 2 or 3 consecutive days against 2 geographically close league teams. In the 2014/15 season, all quarter, half and final games in the playoffs will be played in a best-of-seven series.

Basic round

The basic round began with the first round on September 12, 2014. In the early stages of the season, EC Red Bull Salzburg quickly took the lead and then retained this position for the majority of the season. In the lower table it quickly became apparent that HDD Olimpija Ljubljana in particular had to pay tribute to the thin staffing levels and limited financial possibilities.

At the EC KAC, the controversial coach Martin Stloukal and assistant coach Gerald Ressmann were dismissed just a few games after the start of the season after the team fell far short of expectations in several games. The end of Stloukal's activity in Klagenfurt was a 9-0 home defeat against EHC Linz. By Doug Mason in early October 2014 was presented to his successor.

After the successes in previous years, outdoor games were held again this season. The bigger of the two was the so-called EBEL-Winter Classic 2015 , a Carinthian derby in the Wörthersee Stadium , in which the EC VSV defeated the EC KAC 4-1 on January 3, 2015 in front of 29,700 spectators. As the second team, HDD Olimpija Ljubljana hosted two open-air games in December, although further matches had to be canceled due to the warm weather.

Intermediate round

In the second round, two more coach changes were announced. In February, the Vienna Capitals parted ways with Tom Pokel and signed Jim Boni as their successor , who had already trained the team from 2003 to 2007 and, among other things, led them to the championship title of the 2004/05 season . In addition, the HC Bozen coach Mario Simioni replaced with Don MacAdam .

In the placement round, the EC Red Bull Salzburg prevailed over the EHC Linz, while the EC VSV could not win any of the ten games and was beaten last. In the qualifying round, the HZC Bozen was able to qualify for the playoffs early on, while three teams (EC KAC, EC Graz 99ers and EC Dornbirn) had a chance of second place until the last round. With the EC KAC, the team with the best starting position prevailed.

Quarter finals

In the first quarter-finals, favorite Salzburg prevailed after five games and 4-1 wins against EC VSV, although two of the encounters were only decided in extra time. The fourth game in the series broke the previous record for the longest game in league history; it was only decided in the third overtime at the time mark of 111: 39 minutes by a goal from Salzburg striker John Hughes .

The series between Orli Znojmo and the EC KAC was also decided quite early on. Here the team from Klagenfurt rose to the semi-finals after only five games, with three of the four wins being achieved away from home. Here, too, only two games could be decided in regular time, with the second encounter with a duration of 87:24 minutes also going into the second overtime. Orli Znojmo missed the semi-finals for the fourth time in a row and was unable to win any playoff series in the EBEL.

The Vienna Capitals quickly came under pressure in their series against Sapa Fehérvár AV19 with two opening defeats, with the weakness of the Viennese at home against the sovereign Hungarian team again proving to be decisive in the second game. The Capitals were able to turn the series with two away wins and win the sixth game on their own ice.

The match between Linz and the reigning champions from Bolzano ultimately turned out to be more even than the clear 7: 3 result in favor of Linz in the opening game initially suggested. Both teams were able to win their respective home games in the only series without overtime victories, so this was the only one to go over the full distance of seven games. In the last game, however, the EHC Linz prevailed despite the deficit after the first third and thus took the reigning champions out of the competition.

Semifinals

Salzburg won the semifinals against the KAC with a sweep. In the end, the team proved to be superior in all their encounters, especially in front of the opposing goal. Among other things, this turned out to be a decisive factor in the last game: they equalized twice within a short period of time; the winning goal in overtime fell after just 41 seconds.

In the second semi-final series, the Capitals prevailed after five games, although the opening game had still gone to Linz. The Viennese proved to be a more focused team, while the Linzers lacked consistency in the game for long periods. So the series finally tipped in favor of the Capitals, who also fixed the playoff entry abroad. With game five of the series, the 2015 playoffs exceeded the previous record for most matches that were not decided in regular time.

final

After the semi-finals, the EC Red Bull Salzburg won the final with a sweep. For the Capitals this was the second final sweep after the 2012/13 season . Salzburg also set a record for the fewest games up to the title win, when all series were played as best-of-seven (13 games for 12 wins). EHC Linz also managed two sweeps in the playoffs of the 2002/03 season , but the two series were played in best-of-five mode.
