Ferland began his career in 1999 on the Moncton Wildcats team , with whom he played in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League . After moving to Acadie-Bathurst Titan , he played for three years in the QMJHL. In the NHL Entry Draft 2002 he was selected in the seventh round at position 212 by the Montréal Canadiens , for which he stood in seven encounters on the ice and scored one goal in the 2005/06 season . The Habs used the right winger mainly in the farm team with the Hamilton Bulldogs in the American Hockey League , with whom Ferland won the Calder Cup in the 2006/07 season .

After he never made the leap into the NHL permanently, the Canadian moved to Europe to the EC VSV in 2008 . There he quickly became a crowd favorite and was the team captain of the VSV in the 2010/11 season . In July 2011 the striker was signed by the Vienna Capitals and was one of the top performers and influential figures there in the following years. Between 2014 and 2017 he was team captain of the Capitals and led them to win the Austrian championship in 2017 .

In June 2017 it was announced that head coach Serge Aubin no longer plans with Ferland. On July 11, 2017, it was announced that Jonathan Ferland was moving to Northern Ireland to join the Belfast Giants .
