The Neuhaus castle ruins are the ruins of a summit castle ( high medieval aristocratic castle ) on a 30-meter-high free-standing rocky hill in the Neuhaus district of the Schorndorf municipality in the Upper Palatinate district of Cham in Bavaria .

history

An "Otto de novo castro" is mentioned for the first time in a document in 1254, although it is unclear whether he belongs to the Buchberger or Satelbog family. From the 14th century onwards, the Sattelboger is proven to be the owner of the castle, as evidenced by a testimony from “Milot and Jacob von dem Newnhaus” for Friedrich Sattelboger in 1320 and Konrad Sattelboger is confirmed as the lord of the castle in 1351.

A destruction of Neuhaus Castle by Duke Albrecht III, named for the year 1445 . from Bavaria-Munich because of robber baronships probably refers to Neuhaus Castle near Nittenau in the neighboring district of Schwandorf , which was owned by the Zenger.

Since the castle was divided into different parts, these subsequently passed to several owners. In 1641 the castle was destroyed during the Thirty Years War .

From 1829 to 1918 the ruins were owned by the Thurn und Taxis family and then owned by the Schauer brewing family from Sattelpeilnstein .

Significant remnants of the residential tower wall are still preserved from the summit castle , which today serve as a stage and backdrop for open-air performances ("Theater in the castle").
