Treffelstein castle ruins

The Treffelstein castle ruin , also known as the Drachenturm , is the ruin of a hilltop castle on a 523 meter high rock (Burgstrasse / Am Drachenturm) in Treffelstein in the Cham district in Bavaria .

history

It is unclear whether the mention of Heinrich von Treuenstein in 1290 is related to that of Treffelstein Castle. In 1315 Ruger de Dreuenstein, presumably a son of the former, is the first secured owner of the castle. These gentlemen were either ministerials of the Schwarzenburgs or the Bavarian dukes.

The castle is under Leuchtenberg rule from 1336. Heinrich, Jacob and Hilprant Treffelsteiner are named as servants. From 1400 the castle is owned by the local nobility of the Paulsdorfer , the Nothracht zu Runding and the Satzenhofer and in 1509 Heinrich Guttensteiner zu Schwarzenburg sold the Treffelstein to the Palatinate and in 1530 it was pledged to Hans Fuchs zu Schneeberg. In 1634 the castle was destroyed by Sweden and abandoned after a fire in 1695.

description

Of the former castle complex, only the round keep ( dragon tower ) made of quarry stone masonry with a diameter of 6.5 meters and a wall thickness of 2.5 meters is still preserved on the highest point of the castle rock . The stairs of the south-facing entrance, 10 meters high, are more recent. The tower can be climbed as a viewing tower by appointment and offers a good panoramic view of the area.
