Regenpeilstein Castle

The castle Regenpeilstein is a Spur castle on a spur plateau about 35 meters above the Regental near the settlement Regenpeilstein the city Roding in the district of Cham in Eastern Bavaria .

history

The castle was probably built in the 12th century, 1270 as "castrum Peilstain" in the Bavarian Duke reclaimed mentioned and was probably owned by the Lords of Peilstein.

The extent to which the Peilsteiner family, who can be traced back to about 1135 to 1339, were ministerials of the Diepoldingen and at times also belonged to the imperial ministry, can be associated with Peilstein Castle because of the fact that they have the same name as Castle Sattelpeilnstein near Traitsching .

From 1370 to 1421 the castle was in the allodial possession of the Satzenhofer followed by Heinrich von Preysing, who sold the property to Hans Zenger in 1445. The castle was given to the sovereign in 1462 as a fiefdom and changed hands frequently. In the Thirty Years' War parts of the castle were destroyed. From 1790 to 1824 the castle was again in Allodial ownership, continued to change hands and is still privately owned today.

description

The main castle with two baileys dates back to the 13th century and had a 28-meter-high square keep surrounded by a palace and a curtain wall . The gate tower of the inner outer bailey and its curtain wall were demolished in 1922. The time when the outer outer bailey was built is unclear. A fireplace and a tiled stove indicate that the inner palas was converted in the 16th century.

After the Thirty Years' War, the western curtain wall was rebuilt from 1638 to 1640 and the inner courtyard was built over. In 1790, the Schott family owned substantial renovations to the residential buildings.

The castle chapel St. Jakobus d. Ä. in the baroque style of the 18th century on the north side of the complex shows the pilgrim saint James as a pilgrim with a pilgrim hat , pilgrim staff and bottle. Regenpeilstein Castle was probably a stopover for the pilgrims who went to Rome, or rather Santiago in Spain.
