The first mention of the Zandter dates back to 1122. The oldest owners of the fief Zandt either wrote themselves after the place or gave it their name. A century later, Zandt fell to the powerful family of the Sattelboger from the Bavarian Forest . In 1399 Konrad Sattelboger built a Lady Chapel in the village. The first building historical news comes from the year 1527: a brick castle, chapel , tables , forge and bakery. From 1536 to 1851 Zandt was owned by the Gleißenthalers .

At the end of the 19th century bankers bought the castle property, which was smashed. Since 1949, the former Hofmarkitz has served as an old people's and nursing home, which is still operated by the Bavarian Red Cross today.

Building description

Zandt Castle

The castle is a two-storey, long rectangular building, closed on the north side with crenellated corner towers protruding at obtuse angles. In the middle of the west side there is a striking, octagonal tower, also crowned with battlements, 18 meters high and 2.60 meters in diameter at the top. The part that extends north to the tower is the oldest part of the castle and dates from the 16th century.

The wooden chapel from 1399 was replaced by a brick baroque church in the 17th century . In the 19th century, the Church of Our Lady, until then a subsidiary church of Hofmark, had to be rebuilt twice after two serious fires. Only the figure of Our Lady could be saved every time and is still in the church today. In 1886 the new, larger church in Romanesque style, 23 meters long and nine meters wide, was consecrated.
