Archaeological finds of grain imprints near Knöbling, dating back to the Neolithic Age , provide the earliest evidence of grain cultivation in the Bavarian Forest in 1935. Today's municipality includes the former municipalities of Schorndorf, Neuhaus, Thierling, Obertraubbach and parts of Penting, which were merged into the new municipality of Schorndorf as part of the regional reform in Bavaria in 1972. The provost office of Nanzing (formerly the municipality of Obertraubbach) of the Reichsstift Obermünster owned rich land in the municipality. Schorndorf with its parish church, which has been documented since the 15th century, belonged to the Straubing Rent Office and to the Cham Regional Court of the Electorate of Bavaria . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, the municipal edict of 1818 created the precursor municipalities of today's municipality.
