history

Stone age

Stone axes and other prehistoric finds suggest the first settlements in the Neolithic Age 4500 BC. Close. See also at Stefling .

middle Ages

Furth was first mentioned in a document on April 9, 1086. At that time the Salier emperor Heinrich IV donated several heirloom villages and their income in the margraviate Cham im Nordgau (Bavaria) , including Vurte , which later developed into the city of Furth im Wald, to Regensburg cathedral bailiff Friedrich from the house of the counts of Bogen ( Noble family) for their services during the investiture dispute in favor of the emperor. As the name Vurte suggests, the village was at a ford, by trade and military routes along the floodplain of meandering Chambs in the settlement area of Chodsko in Western Bohemia led. Furth im Wald was first mentioned as a customs post in 1300. In 1332 the Bavarian Duke Heinrich XIV confirmed the town charter. In 1426 army groups of the reform movement of the Hussites looted and murdered in the border region of the Künisches Gebirge , which probably also destroyed the city of Furth. In 1470 a Grenzhauptmannschaft Furth was founded as one of the oldest Bavarian Landwehr organizations and the border flag was consecrated with the coat of arms of the Counts von Bogen (noble family) , the white and blue diamonds. A follow-up version made of precious material was kept in a showcase in the town's local museum. (see literature in Johanna von Herzogenberg ).

Modern times

In 1514 the Further border captain Sigmund von Seyboltsdorff had a border visor drawn up, the oldest cartographic border description from Furth in the forest to the Arber in the Bohemian Forest . The Further Drachenstich was first mentioned in 1590. It is one of the oldest folk plays in the German-speaking area, originally created during a Corpus Christi parade . In this festival, the Hussite Wars have been represented as the background of the dragon stitch since 1951 . In 1633 during the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), evangelical-Lutheran army groups of the Swedes devastated the city, as General Field Marshal Wallenstein a . a. had held a council of war with Octavio Piccolomini in Furth im Wald and had decided to withdraw his army to Eger ( Cheb ). The battle at Antlesbrunn with the capture and looting of the city in the War of the Spanish Succession took place in 1703. In 1764 the border between Bohemia and Bavaria was finally determined between Empress Maria Theresia and the Bavarian Elector Maximilian III. Joseph . Through the Bavarian municipal edict of 1818, the municipal rights of self-government in Furth im Wald were renewed. In 1838 a district court seat was relocated to Furth im Wald, and until 1862 Furth was the seat of administration and court. In 1861 it was connected to the railway network. Furth im Wald became a stop on the main line from Nuremberg to Prague. In 1862, Furth was administratively assigned to the newly established Cham district office , and the regional court continued to exist as a judicial authority. In 1863 a city fire devastated Furth, with the entire eastern half of the city and the old Further city tower being destroyed. Furth survived the Second World War (1939–1945) largely unscathed, although in April and May 1945 in the border area near Cham there were still sometimes bitter fighting with the troops of the American armed forces advancing to West and South Bohemia.

present

From 1946 to 1957 there was a reception camp in Furth im Wald for around 706,000 displaced persons during the period of the expulsion of the Germans from Czechoslovakia . In 1964 the road border crossing over Vollmau (Folmava) in Czechoslovakia was reopened under the strict visa requirements of the Iron Curtain . The dismantling of the border barriers on the Czechoslovak side took place in 1990. The signing of the state treaties on the facilitation of border clearance in rail, road and ship traffic as well as on the mutual support of customs administrations between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Czech Republic followed in 1995 in the town hall of Furth im Wald. On December 21, 2007, the border controls between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Czech Republic ceased and the border station was dissolved.

Incorporations

In 1946 part of the Grabitz community was incorporated. Ränkam (with the other part of the former municipality of Grabitz) and Sengenbühl (until mid-1904 in the Kötzting district office ) were incorporated on January 1, 1972, Lixenried and part of the Herzogau municipality (both from the Waldmünchen district ) on July 1, 1972.

Further rock passages

Like numerous other cities, Furth im Wald is built on a rocky hill, partially tunnelled by underground escape and connecting passages. These are made accessible again by committed local homeland researchers and volunteers interested in helping. The exposed rock passages can be viewed in the summer months. With the almost unchanged layout of the buildings, which has been preserved since the Middle Ages , they provide an interesting glimpse into the history of the streets rebuilt after numerous fires.

Dragon Lake

After the dragon from the Further Volksschauspiel , the Further Drachenstich , the flood storage tank Furth in the forest was named "Drachensee". Around the 175 hectare reservoir of the Chamb river near Furth in the forest, those looking for relaxation and nature explorers will find a special adventure area. What distinguishes the Drachensee from other reservoirs in the Bohemian Forest is a so-called four-zone concept. The focus is on the nature experience zone and the ecological regeneration zone. The measures aimed at compensating for humans and nature create a new, noteworthy habitat that has good prerequisites to offer endangered animals and plants a home and opportunities to survive.

At the northern west bank of the Dragon Lake is a lake stage and from COR-TEN steel -made sculpture "Myth Dragon", a walk-in viewing platform has.
