Georg Anton Dätzel

Georg Anton Dätzel (born February 5, 1752 in Furth i. Wald , † February 3 or February 5, 1847 in Regensburg ) was a German Catholic priest , Jesuit , forest scientist and mathematician .

Life

The son of a city ​​judge graduated from the Jesuit high school in Munich (today: Wilhelmsgymnasium Munich ) in 1768 and received a comprehensive education in the course of a novitiate that began with the Jesuits in 1770 . After teaching as a high school teacher from 1775 to 1778 in Valais , he was appointed professor of philosophy and mathematics at the electoral pagerie in Munich in 1786 . In 1790 he became professor of mathematics and forest science at the local forest school. After being ordained a priest in 1795, he became director of the forest school in Weihenstephan in 1803, teaching forest and natural sciences as well as mathematics. In 1807 he followed a call as a professor of forest science at the then University of Landshut , later to Munich, where he became a clergyman and member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . Dätzel is considered to be the founder of modern forest science in Bavaria. He introduced the polygonometric method of the Saint Petersburg mathematician Anders Johan Lexell in Germany for land surveying .
