Royal Bavarian pagerie

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kurfürstlich , from 1806 the Royal Bavarian Pagerie , was a Bavarian educational institution for young aristocrats that also trained offspring of officers . It existed from 1514 to 1918 and had its seat in Munich .

history

The pagerie, founded in 1514, belonged to the court and was subordinate to the colonel - stable master . Only pupils from the birth nobility were accepted. Specific vocational training or systematic school lessons did not take place, rather the pages were individually prepared for the desired profession according to their intellectual and financial possibilities, because the lessons in music, history, fortress construction, etc. had to be paid for yourself. The level of training was therefore also very different among those who aspired to the same profession. Attending the Jesuit high school in Munich was possible. Those who aspired to military careers received an officer license upon completion of their training . However, the lack of structure in the training and its dependence on the financial performance of the pages or their families meant that the level of training of the graduates when they joined the army was very different. In 1777, with the union of Bavaria with the Electoral Palatinate , the pageries of both principalities were also merged. Plans to merge it with the military academy were repeatedly discussed in the 18th century, but rejected for reasons of class. Under Elector Maximilian IV. Joseph , the previous military academy was reorganized as a cadet corps in 1805 and it was determined that noble boys had to be trained there for two years before entering the pagerie. This ensured that the pagerie provided the army with usable junior officers. Once the Maximilianeum was built, the pagerie was entitled to part of the building.

With the fall of the Wittelsbach monarchy , the pagerie also disappeared. Since she had always remained part of the court, no traditional troop part was specified for her in the Reichswehr .
