The Drachensee , also known as the Furth im Wald flood reservoir, is a flood retention basin on the Chamb in Bavaria . Its dam is located just under two kilometers northeast of the city center of Furth in the forest at the southern foot of the Dieberg (639 m above sea level). The Drachensee protects the town of Furth im Wald in the Cham district from flooding by the Chamb. The reservoir remains permanently dammed up to a height of 405 m above sea level and has a water surface of 88 ha in normal damming.
In a hydroelectric power station , electricity is generated with a small cross- flow turbine with an output of 115 kW with an extended flow rate of 2.1 m³ / s and a useful gradient of 8 meters. The system's standard energy capacity is around 0.6 million kWh per year. The operating facilities are located in a combination structure in the middle of the dam. This is a total of 20 m high, but of which only 11 m above the valley floor. In normal damming the lake is filled with 2.3 million m³ of water at a level of 405 m above sea level. NN filled. In the event of flooding , an additional 3.25 m can be dammed and 4 million m³ of water can be retained.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on July 23, 2003 . On December 14, 2005 the dam was finished and the road over it was opened to traffic. In March 2009, the Furth im Wald flood reservoir was put into operation and inaugurated on May 29, 2009. After the Further Drachenstich it was given the more concise name Drachensee .
The lake is divided into a recreational lake and an eco-zone by an artificial chain of islands connected by a floating jetty. What distinguishes the Drachensee from other reservoirs in Bavaria is its four-zone concept and above all the nature experience zone and the ecological regeneration zone.
The compensatory measures implemented here are intended to create a new habitat that has the prerequisites to offer endangered animals and plants a new home and chance of survival. At the same time, visitors can observe the native bird life in observation stations without disturbance.
