Hugo Geiger

Hugo Emil Otto Conrad Geiger (born April 1, 1901 in Furth im Wald , † July 8, 1984 in Munich ) was a German politician of the CSU .

Life and work

After attending the humanistic grammar school in Munich, Geiger, who was a Roman Catholic , studied mathematics, physics, pedagogy and economics in Munich , Würzburg , Erlangen , Stuttgart and Berlin . After passing the teacher's exam, he was a teacher at the Oberrealschule and the Realgymnasium in Würzburg in 1927/28. In 1929 he quit his civil service and from then on worked for Allianz-Lebensversicherungs AG until 1946 , most recently as a board member. In his free time he was passionate about numismatics . From 1947 to 1951 and from 1971 to 1975 he was chairman of the Bavarian Numismatic Society , which elected him honorary member in 1981.

Political party

In 1945 Geiger participated in the founding of the CSU, whose district association in Munich he headed in 1949/50. From 1952 to 1959 he was the state treasurer.

MP

In 1945 Geiger belonged to the constituent state assembly in Bavaria , and from 1950 to 1953 was also a member of the state parliament there.

Geiger was a member of the German Bundestag from 1953 to 1961. He represented the constituency of Tirschenreuth in parliament. Geiger was from 1953 to 1957 deputy chairman of the committee according to Art. 15 GG, from 23 March 1956 to 10 January 1957 chairman of the Bundestag committee for nuclear questions and from 1957 to 1961 deputy chairman. Chairman of the Nuclear Energy and Water Management Committee.

Geiger was also a member of the European Parliament from February 27, 1958 to November 29, 1961 . There he was from 1959 to 1961 chairman of the committee for questions of scientific and technical research.

Public offices

Between May 28, 1945 and September 28, 1945 he was a member of the Schäffer cabinet responsible for the “Post” division.

From January 10, 1947 to December 18, 1950 he was State Secretary in the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs. As such, he acted as patron when the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft was founded on March 26, 1949.

Honors

After Geiger are the "Hugo-Geiger-Straße" in Sulzbach-Rosenberg and the Hugo-Geiger-Siedlung near Teublitz / Obpf. named. The Hugo Geiger Prize of the Fraunhofer Society also bears his name.
