The 2013/14 season of the Austrian Ice Hockey League was the eleventh season of the highest Austrian ice hockey league under the name Erste Bank Eishockey Liga (EBEL). It began on September 7, 2013 with the opening game between EC Dornbirn and EC VSV and ended on April 13, 2014. HC Bozen became the EBEL champion, who won EC Red Bull Salzburg in five games with 3: Defeated 2 wins. This enabled the first non-Austrian club since the league was renamed to win the EBEL championship. As the best-placed Austrian team, EC Red Bull Salzburg secured the title of Austrian champions .

Participating teams and mode

Map of all club locations for the 2013/14 season

Compared to the previous season, the field of participants changed again. After there had already been rumors, it was confirmed in April 2013 that the Croatian club KHL Medveščak Zagreb was moving to the Continental Hockey League for the 2013/14 season. This ended after four seasons in which the team reached the quarter-finals and semi-finals twice. The team had the most spectators in all four seasons and was also the organizer of many extraordinary events such as the open-air games in the Pula amphitheater .

By leaving, a season with eleven teams was initially planned, although the names of several newcomers were mentioned in the media. Among other things, the Hungarian club Dab.Docler had already applied to participate in the EBEL in January, but was rejected by the majority of the other clubs. The Slovak association ŠHK 37 Piešťany also appeared in several reports.

HC Bozen recorded

The development with the HC Bozen from the Italian A1 series became concrete . The club had also been named as a new member in previous years, but had not received approval from the Italian Ice Hockey Federation. That changed on June 26, 2013. Since it had come to a restructuring of the leagues at the same time due to problems in Italian hockey (many clubs in the second division switched to the also supranational Inter-National League ), the clubs in Serie A expressed theirs Dissatisfaction with permission in a letter to the association and threatened with lawsuits.

mode

The mode of the season had to be organized around the participation in the Olympic Games and the B World Championship, which left little room for maneuver in the design of the schedule. The basic mode with main round, intermediate round and playoffs remained unchanged, but changes were made in detail. Saturday was added to the program as an additional game day, while the semi-finals and finals in the playoffs only played five instead of seven games.

Playoffs

Selection of opponents for the quarter-finals

As in the previous year, this season the three best-placed teams, following the Swedish example, had the right to vote for their respective opponents in the quarter-finals. The election took place on March 3, 2014 live on Servus TV , where representatives of Red Bull Salzburg, HC Bozen and Vienna Capitals announced their decisions. Salzburg chose Dornbirn first, Bozen then Fehérvár and the Capitals chose the VSV. Znojmo, fourth after the pick-round, received the remaining EHC Linz as an opponent. Due to the three-week Olympic break, the semi-finals and finals are played in best-of-five mode, the quarter-finals in the usual best-of-seven mode. The winner of the quarterfinals, who is best placed after the picking round, plays in the semi-finals against the worst placed and the second best against the second worst.
