René Swette (born August 21, 1988 in Lustenau ) is an Austrian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been playing again for HC Innsbruck in the Austrian ice hockey league since August 2019 .

Career

Swette began his career at a young age in the various youth teams of the EHC Lustenau . Thanks to his good performances, he was able to quickly establish himself in the fighting team and reached the climax of his young career in the 2005/06 season , when he was the first goalkeeper with his home club to become champion of the National League , Austria's second-highest division. At the time, Swette was still seventeen years old. After two more successful years in the national league , he signed a contract with the EC KAC and moved to the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga .

There he acted as a backup goalie behind Hannes Enzenhofer and showed excellent performances. After an injury to Enzenhofer, he ended the season as a substitute goalkeeper behind Travis Scott and celebrated his first Bundesliga shutout on December 9th against the Vienna Capitals . Swette even led the goalkeeper statistics at times and ended the season in second place behind Scott. In the 2009/10 season he finally rose to become the first goalkeeper at EC KAC. With the Carinthians he won the Austrian championship title in 2009 and 2013 . In 2013 he achieved the best catch quota in the Austrian league with 92.8% and also the best goals against goals in the playoffs with 1.47 GAA . No new contract option was offered to Swette in 2016. Swette came to the KAC on 227 missions, which was a club record since the establishment of the top division in 2000. His successor as the first goalkeeper was Tomáš Duba .

In October 2016, EBEL rival EHC Linz announced that it would sign René Swette for at least one month due to Michael Ouzas' absence . In November 2016 Swette switched to the DEL2 with a short-term contract with the Dresdner Eislöwen , which expired in January 2017. He was then signed by the EC VSV to replace Olivier Roy , who was injured due to injury .

In May 2017 he was signed by HC Innsbruck .

International

At the U20 World Cup in Division I in 2007 , René Swette was appointed to the junior national team for the first time and was back in the squad again in 2008 , when he achieved the second-highest catch quota and the second-best goal against goals after the German Timo Pielmeier . At the 2008 World Cup, he scored his first shutout in an international competition.

On April 10, 2009 Swette was in the 8-1 defeat in Innsbruck against Russia in the senior national team , but did not make it into the World Cup team. However, he was then part of the Alpine team at the World Championships in the top division in 2011 , 2013 and 2015 , the World Championships in Division I in 2014 and the Olympic qualification for the 2014 Games , the Winter Games in Sochi itself and the Olympic qualification for the Pyeongchang Games in 2018 . So far, however, he has only been used at the 2013 World Cup, when he conceded three goals in the final 4-8 defeat against Russia in the first third and then had to clear the space between the posts for Bernhard Starkbaum , and at the 2015 World Cup, when he stood three times in the gate of the Alpine countries.
