Tyler Cuma (born January 19, 1990 in Bowmanville , Ontario ) is an Austro - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with HC Innsbruck in the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League since 2019 .

Career

Cuma was selected in the 2006 OHL Priority Selection in the first round by the Ottawa 67’s . The defensive defender played four seasons for Ottawa in the Ontario Hockey League . The first season was mixed with plus / minus statistics of −8 and 19 points in 63 games. In the second season, Cuma had a breakthrough. He scored 32 points scorer with a plus / minus statistic of +4. As a result, Cuma was selected in the first round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in 23rd position by the Minnesota Wild . The 2008/09 season ended for Cuma in December 2008 after only 21 games, as a knee injury meant the end of the season for him. In July 2009 he signed an entry-level contract with the Minnesota Wild for three years. It remained the defender of the jump into the NHL roster of the Wild and for the entire season he was again sent to the Ontario Hockey League for the Ottawa 67's.

For the 2010/11 season , the defensive player was included in the squad of the Houston Eros , a farm team of the Minnesota Wild, in the American Hockey League . But again he was unable to complete the entire season injury-free, so that the season ended early for him in February 2011 after Cuma had torn a cruciate ligament and again reported knee problems.

On November 4, 2014, the EC Graz 99ers announced the 24-year-old's commitment until the end of the season after he had previously completed a try-out. Since his mother comes from Vienna , he has both Canadian and Austrian citizenship.

A year later he moved to the Vienna Capitals within the EBEL .

Due to a knee injury, Cuma had to sit out the entire 2018/19 season. In May 2019 HC Innsbruck announced Cuma's commitment.

International

Cuma participated with the Canadian national team in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2008 . During the tournament he was used in all seven Canadians matches and won the gold medal with the team.
