Thomas "Tom" McCollum (born December 7, 1989 in Sanborn , New York ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with HC Innsbruck in the Austrian ice hockey league since August 2020 .

Career

Tom McCollum played for his home team, the Wheatfield Blades, since 1994, before moving to the Guelph Storm in 2006 in the Canadian Junior League OHL . There he was immediately a regular goalkeeper and played 55 of the 68 season games, of which he won 26. During the season he received his first honor when he was invited to the OHL All-Star Game. After the end of the season he was also appointed to the OHL All- Rookie Team and the Third All-Star Team. He was also nominated for the OHL Goaltender of the Year Award and had set a new franchise record with five shutouts within one season .

Shortly after the end of the season, McCollum was appointed to the US youth national team, which took part in the U18 Junior World Championship . McCollum was on the ice in the opening game against Russia , but the USA lost 3-5 , whereupon Josh Unice took over the post as regular goalkeeper. In the end they were able to win the silver medal after they were again defeated by the Russian selection in the final.

At the beginning of the 2007/08 season McCollum could not build on the performance of the previous year, but stabilized again over the course of the season and was named OHL goalkeeper of the month in December. He also played in the CHL Top Prospects Game, an all-star game of the three major Canadian junior leagues with the greatest talents of the year for the NHL Entry Draft . The more the season progressed, the more he improved and in the playoffs McCollum was one of the best players in the Storm when he conceded less than two goals per game on average. The team was eliminated in the second round.

Due to his good performance, the NHL Scouting Central led him as the most hopeful North American goalkeeper talent of his class and in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft 2008 , the Detroit Red Wings finally selected him in position 30. Only a few months later, in October 2008, he signed a three-year entry-level contract in Detroit .

For the 2008/09 season with the Guelph Storm and was one of the best goalkeepers in the league after half of the season. Because of his good performance, he was part of the US team at the U20 World Cup at the turn of the year. McCollum went into the tournament as a regular goalkeeper and started well when the first three games of the group stage could be won with only five goals against. The last group game was clearly lost 4: 7 against Canada and in the quarterfinals the USA were eliminated 3: 5 against Slovakia . Shortly after his return from the World Cup, he was transferred within the OHL from the Guelph Storm to the Brampton Battalion . He helped the team to second place of the regular season in the Eastern Conference and moved with the Battalion in the playoff finals, where they were, however, subject to the Windsor Spitfires .

In autumn 2009 he moved to the pros and sat down in the competition for the second goalkeeper place at the Grand Rapids Griffins , the AHL - farm team of Detroit, against Jordan Pearce by. In Grand Rapids he initially shared the playing time with goalkeeper Daniel Larsson and impressed with good performances in the first month of the season. After that he played much weaker and was sent to the Toledo Walleye , the ECHL farm team of the Red Wings and Griffins, in January 2010 .

He also began the 2010/11 season at the Grand Rapids Griffins and was used in 17 games before McCollum was again sent to the Toledo Walleye in the ECHL. At the end of the season he made his NHL debut for the Red Wings. In the following years, the goalkeeper established himself in the AHL, but was never able to assert himself in the NHL squad, so he only made two appearances for Detroit in the 2014/15 season. After the 2015/16 season, his expiring contract was not extended, so he joined the Los Angeles Kings in August 2016 on a professional tryout contract . This did not take over the goalkeeper, so he signed a two-year contract with the Calgary Flames in October 2016 . In the organization of the Flames, the goalkeeper only played six games for their farm teams in the ECHL and AHL by March 2017 - only one game for the Stockton Heat . In March 2017 he was loaned to the Heat's league competitor, the Charlotte Checkers , until the end of the season. On July 1, 2017, he returned to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a performance-based seven-round suffrage in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft .

In Detroit, his expiring contract was not extended after the 2017/18 season, so he signed a contract with the Milwaukee Admirals in July 2018 that was only limited to the AHL . From there, his NHL cooperation partner, the Nashville Predators , signed him in February 2019 for the rest of the 2018/19 season. He returned to the AHL in July 2019 by signing a contract with Hartford Wolf Pack .
