NHL Entry Draft
 <2017 2019>

The 2018 NHL Entry Draft took place on June 22nd and 23rd, 2018. The venue for this 56th edition of the NHL Entry Draft was the American Airlines Center in Dallas , Texas . In seven rounds, the NHL teams selected 217 players.

The Buffalo Sabers chose Swedish defender Rasmus Dahlin in first position , making him only the second Swede chosen as a First Overall Draft Pick after Mats Sundin ( 1989 ). The Russian winger Andrei Swetschnikow for the Carolina Hurricanes and the Finnish center Jesperi Kotkaniemi for the Canadiens de Montréal followed in second and third place . As a result, for the first time since 1999, no Canadian was among the top three elected players, while for the first time in the history of the NHL Entry Draft, five different nations were represented in the top five positions. In addition, Liam Kirk (position 189; Arizona Coyotes ), the first player born and trained in England , was selected.

Available players

All players born between January 1, 1998 and September 15, 2000 are eligible for the draft. In addition, all undrafted, non-North American players over the age of 20 are eligible for the draft. Also available are those players who were elected in the NHL Entry Draft 2016 and who had not signed an entry contract with their original draft club by the time of the Entry Draft 2018 .

The draft order of the teams that did not reach the playoffs in the 2017/18 season was determined by the draft lottery. As in the last two years, not only the first right to vote was raffled, but also the second and third. The chances of winning for the first right to vote are shown in the table; for the second and third right to vote, the percentages were then adjusted accordingly, depending on who won the previous right to vote. Compared to the previous year, all percentages increased slightly, as the Vegas Golden Knights got the same chance in the 2017 draft as the third worst team. This relatively large percentage has now been divided up among all the other teams. Nevertheless, the probability of the worst team of the season not winning any of the first three voting rights in the lottery was more than 50%; for the third worst team already over 66%.

The draft lottery took place on April 28, 2018, with the Buffalo Sabers, as the team with the lowest points of the previous season, also being awarded the first right to vote. The second right to vote went to the Carolina Hurricanes , which rose nine places. The third lottery won the Canadiens de Montréal and improved by one rank.

The draft order of the 16 playoff participants was determined after the Stanley Cup final. The Stanley Cup winner (Washington) was placed on position 31, the opponent in the final (Vegas) on position 30. The teams eliminated in the conference finals were sorted into positions 28 and 29. The remaining playoff teams were set based on their standings in the regular season. The rule was that the team with the fewest table points was in 16th position. The draft order applied to all rounds of the Entry Draft, so the lottery only changed the order of the first round of voting. In addition, the teams could acquire voting rights from other teams via transfers as well as give their own to other teams.

Transfer of first-round voting rights

date From To annotation
23rd June 2017 St. Louis Blues Philadelphia Flyers The St. Louis Blues received Brayden Schenn and in return sent Jori Lehterä , a first-round right to vote in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and a conditional first-round right to vote for this draft to Philadelphia.
