Miyamoto Saburō ( Japanese 宮本 三郎 ; born May 23, 1905 , in Ishikawa Prefecture ; died October 13, 1974 ) was a Japanese painter of the Yōga direction during the Shōwa period .

life and work

Miyamoto studied painting at the Kawabata Art School ( 川端 画 学校 , Kawabata gagakkō ) under Fujishima Takeji and at the Kansai Art Academy ( 関 西 美術 院 , Kansai Bijutsuin ). From 1938 to 1939 he continued his education in France at the Académie Ranson. Miyamoto was a long-time member of the Nika-kai ( 二 科 会 ) artists' association .

During the Pacific War , like many other painters, he worked as a war painter. For the painting “ Yamashita and Percival at the handover of Singapore” ( 山下 ・ パ ー シ バ ル 両 司令官 会見 図 , Yamashita, Pāshibaru ryō shireikan kaiken-zu ) which represents the handover negotiations between the Japanese commander Yamashita and the commander of Singapore, Percival , in 1942 , was awarded the Academy of Arts Prize. It is based on a press photo taken during the handover negotiations in 1942. - His painting “Surprise attack on Manado by the naval parachute troops” ( 海軍 落下 傘 部隊 メ ナ ド 奇襲 , Kaigun rakkasan butai Menado kishū ) from 1943, which depicts the air landing near Manado , received the Asahi Prize .

In 1946 Miyamoto became a lecturer at the Kanazawa College of Art. In 1947 he founded the Niki-kai ( 二 紀 会 ) with Kumagai Morikazu and other friends , of which he also became president. In 1955 he received a position at Tokyo University of Education. He was also a member of the Academy of Arts.

In 1980 the "Miyamoto Saburō Memorial Museum" ( 宮本 三郎 記念 美術館 ) was opened in the birthplace of Komatsu . In 1998, oil paintings, sketch sheets and other items were added from the estate, so that a renovation was carried out, which was opened in 2000. A branch museum was also opened in Tokyo in 1998.
