Manado is located in Manado Bay and is surrounded by mountains. The city has an area of 157.26 km².

administration

The city does not belong to any administrative district, but is directly subordinate to the province. Manado is divided into five districts: Wenang , Sario , Malalayang , Molas and Mapanget .

population

The majority of the 600,000 inhabitants belong to the Minahasa ethnic group . There is also a traditionally strong Chinese minority in the city. The majority of the population are Protestant Christians, there are also many Catholics and minorities of Muslims and Hindus. Manado Malay , a Creole language, is spoken in the city and its surroundings . The facial features of the Filipinos are also visible among the locals .

history

The city was founded in 1623. The Dutch East India Company built a fortress in Manado in 1658. Between 1820 and 1860, the Minahasa , who live in and around Manado, were extremely successful in missionary work by Dutch missionaries. In 1830 the Javanese prince Diponegoro was exiled by the Dutch government in Manado. In 1844 an earthquake leveled the city, so that it had to be built from scratch by the Dutch. 14 years later, during a visit , the naturalist Alfred Wallace described the city as one of the most beautiful in the east. The Dutch exerted such great economic and cultural influence on the region that it was at times referred to as the twelfth province of the Netherlands.

From 1942 to 1945 Manado was occupied by the Japanese . In 1945 Manado was heavily bombed by the Allies.

During the Indonesian War of Independence , the population was divided between nationalists and those who favored Dutch rule. In the 1950s, Manado became the center of a movement that objected to Javanese dominating the young Indonesian state and calling for the central government to treat the periphery (for example Sulawesi) equally. In March 1957, Sulawesi's autonomy was proclaimed in Manado by the Charter of the Universal Struggle ( Piagam Perjuangan Semesta Alam ). A rebel movement emerged that named itself after the charter "Permesta" (from Per juangan Se mesta ). The Permesta movement took power in Manado and declared Manado its capital. As a result, the Indonesian Air Force bombed Manado in February 1958; in June 1958, Indonesian troops captured the city.

With the construction of the Bitung deep-sea port and direct flight connections to Singapore , trade and tourism have increased since the 1990s. Tourism lives primarily from Manado's reputation as a diving paradise because of its coral reefs.

The first World Ocean Conference took place in Manado in May 2009 .

Economy and Transport

There are four shopping centers on Piere Tendean Boulevard alone: Mega Mall, Manado Town Square, Boulevard Mall and IT Center.

Sam Ratulangi Airport is located 13 km northeast of the city .

Attractions

Ban Hin Kiong, Chinese temple in Manado

The main attraction are the diving areas on the offshore island of Bunaken with its underwater national park. The city itself is now characterized by shopping centers and has a faceless appearance. Also worth mentioning are the 19th century Chinese temple Kienteng Ban Hian Kong and the oldest Buddhist temple in eastern Indonesia. A festival is held there in February. In the hinterland, the volcanoes Gunung Lokon and Gunung Klabat and the lakes Danau Linow and Danau Tondano offer an attractive landscape.
