Bitung is a city in the Sulawesi Utara province (North Sulawesi) in Indonesia with 187,652 inhabitants (as of 2010).
Bitung has the status of a kota . The area is completely surrounded by the Minahasa Utara administrative district (northern Minahasa ). A few kilometers away is the 1149 m high stratovolcano Tongkoko , which erupted for the last time in 1880.
The city has a port and is the seat of several industrial companies. The port is used for passenger traffic and the export of agricultural products. It is protected by the island of Lembeh .
The area is divided into the eight subdistricts ( Kecamatan ) Maesa, Matuari, Aertembaga, Girian, Madidir, Ranowulu, Lembeh Selatan and Lembeh Utara.
