Life

Carlo Barabino is one of the most important and creative architects of the city of Genoa in the 19th century.

His designs, which he produced mainly for his native city, were of great importance for the cityscape. His works, strongly influenced by Classicism , met with a benevolent response from the population and administrative circles and shaped the architectural style of the first half of the century. In the area of urban planning, Barabino had an influence in Genoa like only Galeazzo Alessi before .

He received his first training at the Accademia Ligustica di Genova . In 1788 he went to Rome to there in the studio of Giuseppe Barbieri to learn. After winning several important architecture prizes, he returned to Genoa in 1793 to begin his work as an architect.

Right at the beginning of his career, he was awarded honorary membership of the Accademia Ligustica together with Lorenzo Fontana (the son of Gaetano Cantoni ) and Giacinto Pellegrini for his project that expanded the pier in Genoa and made it more attractive . On June 7, 1802, Carlo Barabino was given the three-year management of the merged schools for architecture and design within the academy.

The neoclassical baths of the Ligurian Republic in Via dei Servi are among Barabino's first works . These were completed in 1797. In connection with this construction, however, there were cases of embezzlement , so that Barabino had to withdraw from the public for a few years. His possible guilt could not be clarified until today.

During this period he received several small orders. In 1801 he was appointed to the supervisory commission for the Foro Bonaparte project in Milan . In 1805 he opened his own studio with Giovan Battista Crovetto . In 1818, Barabino was appointed city architect of Genoa.

The year 1825 was of great importance for Barabino, as it was in this year that he was able to realize most of his most important designs. First and foremost, this includes the Teatro Carlo Felice . At the same time he was significantly involved in urban planning and influenced the cityscape for the next few decades.

In addition to his work as an architect and urban planner, Barabino also pursued intensive teaching activities. As early as 1807 he had opened a teaching studio together with Giovan Battista Crovetto. From 1808 to 1811 he held the post of director of the design school of the Accademie Ligustica and from 1824 until his death he finally took over the management of the entire academy. His students include Giovan Battista Resasco and Ignazio Gardella (senior).

Carlo Barabino died in 1835 during a cholera epidemic when he had just been entrusted with the project for the realization of the Staglieno monumental cemetery .
