Ayas ( Walser German Ajats ) is an Italian commune in the autonomous region of Aosta Valley . The community has 1380 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), is located at an average altitude of 1698  m slm (near Saint-Jacques) and has a size of 129 km².

The inhabitants are called Ayassini or Ayassins . Ayas is a member of the Unité des Communes valdôtaines Évançon and is located in the Ayas Valley.

Ayas consists of the districts Antagnod, Champoluc, Saint-Jacques, Bisous, Mandrou, Magnéaz, Palouettaz, Palenc, Champlan, Frachey, Pra Sec, Rovinal, Drole, Blanchard, Péyo, Réze, Crojettaz, Fiére, Suttsun, Cunéaz, Crest, Frantse, Mascognaz, Pilaz, Magnéchoulaz, Ériou, Périasc, Périasc d'aval, La Crouch, Trochey, Meytére, Cornu, Corbet, Lignod, Borbey, L'Ojel, Goil deseut, Goil damon, Piéit, Granon, Graines.

Champoluc is a well-known winter sports resort.

The neighboring municipalities are Brusson , Chamois , Châtillon , Gressoney-La-Trinité , Gressoney-Saint-Jean , La Magdeleine , Saint-Vincent , Valtournenche and Zermatt (Switzerland).

During the time of fascism , the village had the Italianized name Aiàs .
