Torgnon (Walser German Tornjunh ) is an Italian municipality in the autonomous region of Aosta Valley with 559 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
geography
The municipality is located at an altitude of 870 m in the Valtournenche , a side valley of the Aosta Valley.
The municipality of Torgnon consists of the districts Berzin, Champagnod, Champeille, Chantorné, Chaté, Châtelard, Chatrian, Cheille, Chésod, Étirol, Fossemagne, Gilliarey, Gombaz, Lévaz, Mazod, Mongnod (chef-lieu), Nozon, Pecou, Petit- Moons, Ponty, Septumian, Triatel, Valleil, Verney, Vesan Dessous, Vesan Dessus, which extend up to 1500 m . However, the municipality extends up to an altitude of about 3200 m .
The neighboring municipalities are Antey-Saint-André , Bionaz , Châtillon , Nus , Saint-Denis , Valtournenche and Verrayes .
The waterfalls and the narrow gorge of the Marmore torrent are attractions.
history
The Valtournenche takes its name from the old village of Torgnon: The old Latin name Vallis Tornenchia became French Valtournenche and in the local Franco-Provencal patois it became Vótornéntse .
During the time of fascism , the place had the Italianized name Torgnone .
economy
In addition to mountain farming, which also includes the production of the special raw milk cheese Fontina from the Aosta Valley, tourism, especially winter tourism with around 20 km of ski slopes , plays an important economic role.
