Avise is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 302 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the autonomous region of Aosta Valley .

The municipality is located about 9 km southwest of Aosta in the Valdigne, as the upper part of the Aosta Valley is called, on the orographic left side of the Dora Baltea at 775  m slm.The neighboring municipalities are Arvier , La Salle , La Thuile , Saint-Nicolas , Saint- Pierre and Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses .

According to the municipal statute, Avise has the following historically recognized Vedeun, Lo Coudrai, Lo Tomassè, Hèla, Tsarbon - ii, Plan, Lo Prò, Lo Cri, Oveuzo, Runa, La Clluza.

The place is a member of the inter-municipal body Unité des Communes valdôtaines Grand-Paradis .

history

The geographical location in the immediate vicinity of a narrow point through which the Roman road Via Publica led from the Po plain over the little Saint Bernard to Gaul , was of great importance for the development of the place as a control point.

It was the D'Avise, one of the oldest noble families in the Aosta Valley, who shaped the town and had several castles built in the small town, including the Castello di Avise from the 15th century.
