The Castello di Avise is a massive castle at the entrance to the Italian municipality of Avise in the Aosta Valley . It is often confused with the Castello di Blonay in the center of the village, near the church. The latter was the D'Avise family's first home . The nobles later moved to the Castello di Avise, which still bears their name today.
history
Boniface d'Avise or Rudolphe d'Avise had the castle built in 1492, which was then in the hands of the family for a long time. After the D'Avises died out, it fell to the Biancos from San Secondo , who sold them in 1798.
Today there are exhibitions in the castle.
description
The castle is well preserved. It is more of a permanent house than a castle. Attached to it is a tower with a square floor plan, slightly higher than the rest of the building, on the top of which there are elegant machicolations , which are decorated with Gothic motifs called "Goccia rovesciata" (German: reverse drop).
The facade shows double windows from the 16th century of remarkable effect, often made with old stone inserts that form the frame. As the geologist Francesco Prinetti points out, the masonry shows examples of three basic stone families found in the area: oceanic marble alternates with gneiss , which comes from the continental stock, and amphibolite , which comes from deep, igneous inclusions from bygone eras originates. The decorative elements, from stone blocks on the doors and windows to the keel arches , are made of marble and slate (Kalkler).
The carved family coat of arms and the motto "Qui tost Avise tard se repent" are located above the entrance door to the tower.
Throughout the castle you can clearly see the various construction phases and the changes that have been carried out over the centuries: some corridors have been bricked up, while windows have been built in again to allow more light to enter the rooms in line with the changed use as an aristocratic palace allow.
inside rooms
On the ground floor is the kitchen, which housed a tin collection that one of the last members of the D'Avise family put together and that no longer exists today.
On the first floor there is the “Stanza della cassaforte” (dt .: safe room), in which the everyday life of the upper middle class in the second half of the 19th century is depicted, and the “Sala delle mensole” (dt .: shelf space), which is so called because it houses 14 carved wooden shelves, the figures in costumes from the 15th century, animals or mythological monsters with a clear reference - in the restoration in the 19th century - to taste in a medieval castle in the Aosta Valley.
Inside there is also a large hall with a coffered ceiling .
In the castle there are some pieces of frescoes and decorations overlaid with graffiti from different periods (although not of the same interest as the one in the Castello di Issogne ).
