Gressoney-Saint-Jean ( Walser German Greschòney zer Chilchu ) is an Italian commune in the Aosta Valley region and is the sponsor of the TCI's Bandiera Arancione .
Dates and location
The community has 795 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
It consists of the districts (ital. Frazioni, frz. Hameaux ) Bieltschòcke, Bode, Chaschtal, Dresal, Loomatto (Loomatten), Méttelteil (middle part), Mettie, Noversch, Òbre Biel, Òbre Champsil, Òbro Verdebio, Òndteil (lower part), Òndre Biel, Òndre Champsil, Òndro Verdebio, Perletoa, Predeloasch, Stocket, Trentostäg, Tschemenoal (Chemonal), Tschoarde, Tschossil and Woald.
Gressoney-Saint-Jean is located in the Lystal and belongs to the Union of Aosta Valley Walser communities . The neighboring municipalities are Ayas , Brusson , Gaby , Gressoney-La-Trinité , Rassa ( VC ) and Riva Valdobbia (VC).
Language and history
The population is Walser ; especially the older generations are still speaking German today. In Walser German , the community territory is divided into a central part and a lower part; the village center around the church is called the square or Zer Chilchu .
Attractions
The Castel Savoia of the House of Savoy was built at the instigation of Queen Margaret of Savoy as a summer residence at the end of the 19th century. There is an alpine botanical garden near the castle.
