Riva Valdobbia (Walser German Rifu , Piedmontese la Riva ) is a fraction of the Italian municipality ( comune ) Alagna Valsesia in the province of Vercelli , Piedmont region . Riva Valdobbia was an independent municipality until 2018.

geography

The fraction is located about 2 km southeast of the center of Alagna Valsesia and 95 km from the provincial capital Vercelli at an altitude of 1112  m slm on the orographic right side of the valley of the Valsesia . The place is at the beginning of the Val Vogna , which continues in a south-westerly direction and is traversed by the Torrente Vogna, which flows into the Sesia River at Riva Valdobbia .

history

Originally the place was called Petrae gemellae (German: twin stones , Italian Pietre Gemelle, Walser German Presmell), the reason are two large boulders that can still be seen on the outskirts. The first mention of the place goes back to the year 1217. Later the area was colonized by the Walsers , who mixed with the previous inhabitants of the region. Riva Valdobbia became part of the municipality of Alagna Valsesia on January 1st, 2019. The former municipal area covered an area of ​​61.69 km² to which the 20 fractions Balma, Boccorio, Buzzo, Cà di Janzo, Cambiaveto, Cà Morca, Cà Piacentino, Cà Verno, Cà Vescovo, Gabbio, Isolello, La Montata, Oro, Peccia, Piana Fuseria, Piane, Rabernardo, Sant'Antonio, Selveglio and Vogna Sotto were among them.

Attractions

In Rabernardo there is a museum about the culture of the Walser . The village church of the Archangel Michael is worth seeing.
