The Valsesia or Tseschrutol in Walser German is an alpine valley in the Italian province of Vercelli , Piedmont region . The river Sesia , which gives the valley its name, flows through the valley . It extends from the Monte Rosa massif to the Vercelli plain and has several side valleys, the mountain streams of which flow into the Sesia.

The main valley, Val Grande called ( not to be confused with the north-east, above Verbania located Val Grande ) has an S-shape. The highest municipality in this valley is Alagna Valsesia . The main side valleys are the Val Mastallone and the Val Sermenza , which get their names from the mountain streams that flow through them.

The municipalities in Valsesia include Varallo Sesia , Borgosesia , Gattinara , Scopello , Alagna Valsesia , Quarona , Fobello , Rimella , Alto Sermenza (formed in 2018 from the previous municipalities of Rima San Giuseppe and Rimasco ), Boccioleto , Rossa , Carcoforo , Romagnano Sesia , Vocca , Balmuccia , Scopa , Campertogno , Piode , Cravagliana and Serravalle Sesia .

In Valsesia a version of Piedmontese called Valsese is spoken . In the last few decades the influence of the Italian language has risen sharply and young people hardly speak Piedmontese anymore. In the two Walser settlements of Alagna Valsesia and Rimella, Walser German is still sometimes spoken.

There are some industries in the lower parts of Varallo, Borgosesia, Quarona and Serravalle. These are mainly the textile industry and precision engineering companies. Agriculture is also practiced, the wine from Gattinara, which also bears this name, is known here. The higher places live mainly from handicrafts and tourism, whereby both mountain hikers in summer and skiers in winter are addressed. Several stages of the 55-day long-distance hiking trail Grande Traversata delle Alpi run on the north side of the valley . The area around Alagna has lifts, mountain huts and slopes for summer and winter sports.
