The province of Vercelli is an Italian province in the Piedmont region with 170,296 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
Geography and traffic
The area of the province of Vericelli consists of an alpine part in the north and a more densely populated part in the lowlands that adjoins it to the south. The two areas are connected by a narrowing at Serravalle Sesia .
Around the capital of the same name in the south of the province extends a plain shaped by rice fields, which is irrigated by rivers and torrents. One of these rivers is the Sesia , which gives the Valsesia its name. It rises on the glaciers of Monte Rosa in the north.
The province is crossed by three motorways : the A4 Milan – Turin in east-west direction, the A26 Voltri ( Genoa ) - Simplon in south-north direction, and the connecting motorway Santhià – Ivrea, which connects the A4 with the A5 Turin– Aosta connects.
The province is crossed by the Turin – Milan line, while Vercelli is connected to Biella and to Mortara and Pavia . There is also a connection from Varallo Sesia in Valsesia to Novara .
tourism
The Valsesia is the area of the province that mainly contributes to tourism. The white water course at Varallo Sesia plays a major role . But the region is also used as a ski area, especially Mera and Alagna Valsesia.
The Sacred Mount Sacro Monte di Varallo is located in the municipality of Varallo Sesia . It is a well-known place of pilgrimage and has been recognized by UNESCO as one of the Sacri Monti as a World Heritage Site since 2003 .
