  • The Autostrada A5 ( Italian for 'Autobahn A5'), also known as Autostrada della Valle d'Aosta (Italian) and Autoroute de la Vallée d'Aoste (French) (German: Aosta Valley Motorway ), is an Italian motorway in the far north-west of the country that runs from Turin ( Piedmont ) through the Aosta Valley to the Mont Blanc tunnel on the border with France . It is a total of 140 km long, has four lanes, is fully toll road and was opened to traffic in 1961.

    course

    Tracciato A5.svg

Since three different operating companies are responsible for the motorway, it can be divided into three sections. However, this is of no importance to the motorist.

    Turin – Quincinetto (Piedmont)

The 1st section between Turin and Quincinetto and the junction to the A4 to Santhià (official name: Diramazione A4 / A5 Ivrea-Santhià ) is operated by the Ativa company. It is 53 km long on the main line and has seven connection points . There is also the 23 km long connection to the A4, which has another exit.

    Quincinetto – Aosta (Aosta Valley)

The 2nd section begins at the regional border at Quincinetto and leads to Aosta , the capital of the Aosta Valley . It is almost 60 km long and is operated by the SAV Spa . There are five connection points on this section.

    Aosta – Courmayeur (Aosta Valley)

The third and last section leads from Aosta to the French border. It is operated by RAV SpA-Raccordo Autostradale Valle d'Aosta SpA , a member of the Gruppo Autostrade per l'Italia . The last exit on Italian soil is Courmayeur . The tunnel section of the Mont Blanc tunnel , which has its own name, then begins . On the French side , take the national road 205 to the motorway 40 towards Geneva and the Rhone Valley .

    history

Construction of the motorway between Tuin and Quincineto began in 1958. After three years of construction, this section was opened to traffic in May 1961.

The further route to Aosta was opened in different stages:

    • Quincinetto - Verrès, July 2, 1967
    • Verrès - Châtillon, October 16, 1968
    • Châtillon - Nus, July 9, 1969
    • Nus - Aosta est / Aoste est, May 27, 1970.
    • Aosta est / Aoste est - Aosta ovest / Aoste ouest, December 24, 1994

In 1983 the company RAV - Raccordo Autostradale Valle d'Aosta SpA was founded to design, build and manage the section between Aosta and the Mont Blanc tunnel. This section was opened in the following stages:

    • Aosta Ovest / Aoste ouest – Morgex, May 26, 1994
    • Morgex – Courmayeur, June 29, 2001
    • Courmayeur – Entrèves, 2007

    Regional importance

The A5 is very important in two ways. On the one hand, it facilitates access to the ski areas of the Italian-French Alps , and on the other hand, it favors the movement of goods between the two neighboring countries.

    toll

These user fees - calculated from the Torino Nord toll station to the specified junction - must be paid for cars along the entire A5: (As of June 17, 2012, source: Autostrade per l'Italia SpA)

    exit toll
    Volpiano € 2.00
    San Giorgio Canavese € 3.10
    Scarmagno € 3.60
    Ivrea € 4.20
    Quincinetto € 5.30
    Pont-Saint-Martin € 7.20
    Verrès € 8.30
    Châtillon - Saint-Vincent € 9.00
    Nut € 12.20
Barriera Aosta GS Bern. / Péage Aoste Grand-Saint-Bernard € 14.30
Barriera Aosta Monte Bianco / Péage Aoste Mont-Blanc € 20.30

The section from the Mont Blanc tunnel to Aosta costs 6 €; in the opposite direction, this fee applies not only to the drive to the tunnel itself, but also to the exit in Aosta-Ovest or later. Driving through the tunnel by car costs € 44.20 in the direction of France and € 43.50 in the direction of Italy (as of 2016). A return ticket for the return journey costs just a little more.

  • The feeder between the A5 and the state road 27 Gran San Bernardo is a 7.9 km long road, which runs mostly (6761 m) through tunnels and serves to connect the SS 27 with the A5 without crossing the local area of Aosta have to.

Although the section has only one carriageway without a cross-section (2 + 1 system) and there are no signs for the start and end of the autobahn, it is regarded by AISCAT as a section of the autobahn. The feeder has the same traffic restrictions as on the highways.

The route was built by and is also managed by SAV SpA . The first section of 5.6 km, including the longest tunnel (between the A5 and the Gran San Bernardo state road directly behind the Buthier river crossing ), was opened to public transport on December 19, 1997, while the second 2.3 km long section (consisting of the shorter tunnel and the connection with the state road 27 of the Gran San Bernardo in the direction of Switzerland) was made accessible to public transport on November 5, 2001. Both tunnels are single-tube in the 2 + 1 system (2 lanes for traffic upwards, 1 lane for traffic downwards). The feeder can be reached from the A5 via the Aosta est junction. The maximum permissible speed on the entire section of the feeder is 80 km / h.

This feeder is in accordance with the internal numbering of Autostrade per l'Italia as Raccordo R39 / Aosta - Gran San Bernardo classified
