The N205 is a French national road that was established in 1860 with the connection of the county of Nice to France, between Nice and a road bridge in the Tinée valley at the foot of the Tête de Vinaigre without a connection to another national road. Their length was 86.5 kilometers. The street thus opened up the Mercantour . In 1920 the second version of the Route des Alpes was formed as the N202. Instead, the N205 gave up the section in the Var valley . Thus the length of the road was only 57.5 kilometers. In 1973 it was downgraded. In 1978 a new N205 was created from a chain of sections of other national roads; the number probably derived from the N505, which she took over:

In 2006 it was graduated between the Swiss border and Le Fayet, as the A40 is located in parallel.
