The Route nationale 44 , or N 44 or RN 44 for short , is a French national road that was established in 1824 between Châlons-en-Champagne and the N17 south of Cambrai. It goes back to the route impériale 45. Their length was 164 kilometers. In 1940 she was north passed around La Fere and the old leadership was on the N38 and new N38 signposted ^E distributed. In 1949, the N44 took over the section between Châlons-en-Champagne and Vitry-le-François from the N4; it was also taken from Saint-Quentin via the N336 and N338 to the N37 south of Péronne. The old route north of Saint-Quentin became the N44bis. The length changed to 194.5 kilometers. In 1973 the section between Estrées-en-Chaussée and the N37 was graduated. In 1978 the N29 took over the section between Saint-Quentin and Estrées-en-Chaussée and the N44 got a new route:

In 2006 it was graduated between Cambrai and La Veuve. The remainder of the section, which connects the A4 with the N4, has been partially expanded as an expressway and is to be completed in the future.

N 44a

The Route nationale 44 ^A , or N 44 ^A or RN 44 ^{A for} short , was a side branch of the N44 from 1950 to 1973, which arose from the old access road of the N4 to Châlons-en-Champagne. Today it bears the number D1.

N 44bis

The Route nationale 44bis , or N 44bis or RN 44bis for short , was created in 1949 from the route of the N44 between Saint-Quentin and the N17 south of Cambrai, when it was led to the N37 at Péronne. The length was 28 kilometers. In 1978 it became the N44 again. The route of the N44bis can be found in the info box of the N44 here in the article as a section.

N 44e

The Route nationale 44 ^E , N 44 ^E or RN 44 ^{E for} short , was a side branch of the N44 from 1953 to 1956, which arose from it when it was moved to the new southern bypass of Laon. Today it bears the number D181.
