The Route nationale 46 , or N 46 or RN 46 for short , was a French national road .

The national road was laid between Marle and Verdun in 1824. It goes back to route 46 impériale. In 1845 it was led from Varennes-en-Argonne to the N3 in Parois and its old route is now number D38. From then on, its length was 141.5 kilometers. In 1973 it was downgraded to its full length. In 1978 there was another national road 46 for a short time as an expressway between Lens and Dourges . In the same year this was still signposted as a motorway with the number C26. Today it is part of Autobahn 21 .
