The N13 is a French national road established between Paris and Cherbourg in 1824. It goes back to the route impériale 14. Their length was 344.5 kilometers. In 1836 a short section west of Lisieux was relocated to a new, 2-kilometer-longer route. In 1844 it was extended by 8 kilometers to Fort de Querqueville. In 1949 it swapped the route between Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Mantes-la-Jolie with the N190. The length changed to 353.5 kilometers. In 1971 the section between Cherbourg and the fort was downgraded, except for the part that the N801 interrupted. In 1973 it was graduated between Orgeval and Mantes-la-Jolie. In 2006, except for the Caen and Cherbourg section, a short stretch between the Boulevard Périphérique de Paris and La Défense (the western part of metro line 1 and RER line A runs under this), the southern bypass of Saint-Germain-en-Laye including connection to the west to the A13, as well as the gradation of the N13 between junction 15 of the A13 and the eastern bypass of Évreux.

Side branches in and near Cherbourg

The N13 got three side branches in Cherbourg in 1852, which connected the military port. They were created during the modernization of the defenses in Cherbourg. The letters "a" to "c" were used:

In 1858 two more side branches were established. These ran to Fort des Flamands and Mare de Tourlaville. This was not numbered as N801 A and N801 B until 1933 . All were downgraded in 1971.
