The Voie Sacrée ( Sacred Way, NVS ) is a road in France from Bar-le-Duc to Verdun . During the Battle of Verdun it was the main artery for the supplies of the French Army .

history

Until the First World War , the line was an insignificant side street between Bar-le-Duc and Verdun . During the war, were troops, equipment and supplies to the on this road front of Verdun managed ( Noria ), in the summer of 1916 every week 90,000 people and 50,000 tons of ammunition, supplies and equipment. In some cases, up to 9,000 trucks were used daily to transport supplies and troops on the way there and to take the wounded with them on the way back. It was only after the war that the street was called Voie Sacrée , based on the Via Sacra, by the writer Maurice Barrès .

Likewise, it was only after the war that the road was officially added to the French national road network on December 30, 1923 . However, it was the only national road that was not marked with a number, but only marked as Voie Sacrée . It was also abbreviated with the letters NVS (French: [Route] Nationale Voie Sacrée ). From 1978 to 2006, the road on the stretch between Bar-le-Duc and the junction with the former Route nationale 3 (N 3) was administratively classified as Route nationale 35 . From this intersection to Verdun , the road ran on the route of the N 3. In 2006, due to the restructuring of the entire national road network, the road was graded and is now referred to as the Route départementale D 1916 in relation to the war year 1916 .
