Historic course of the road

The historic national road 401 ran in two sections from 1933 to 1973 from Saint-Dizier to Chambley-Bussières . The sections were bridged by the Voie Sacrée , a numberless national road. In 1978 the section from Saint-Dizier to Bar-le-Duc was rededicated as National Road 35 . In addition, the national road 1 D , a short, 1.5 km long connecting road between the national road 1 and the motorway 1 in Saint-Denis , which was signposted as a national road in the course of the motorway construction, was signposted as N 401. The graduation of National Road 1 in 2006 reduced the length from one and a half to one kilometer.
