The Route nationale 9 , or N 9 or RN 9 for short , is a French national road .

The road was laid out in 1824 and arose from the routing of Route impériale 10. Its length was 597.5 kilometers.

The national road branched off from Route nationale 7 in Moulins and ran to the Spanish border at Le Perthus. In Spain it will then be continued as the N-II national road to Madrid.

Until 1945 the N 9 ran via Port-la-Nouvelle . Then it took over the course of the road from the N 9 B , which then took over the connection from Port-la-Nouvelle. This reduced the length by 5.5 kilometers.

In 1969, due to the damming of Lac du Salagou, the N 9 was relocated to sections of the N 109 and N 608 routes , as well as a new route west of Ceyras, which is now part of the A75.

In the 1990s, the A75 (Clermont-Ferrand - Béziers) autoroute, which was being built in parallel, downgraded many sections. Some of the expressway sections of the N 9 were integrated into the route of the motorway.

On June 13, 1993, the N9 was interrupted by a rock slide on the southern ramp of the Pas de l'Escalette. Work on the tunnel under construction was accelerated and operations began in the summer of 1994.

In 2006, except for a short section through Massiac , which connects the N122 with the A75, the rest of the national road was converted into departmental roads .

N 9a

The N9 A was a branch of the N9 and a direct successor to the Route nationale 9bis . It existed from 1933 to 1978. It was followed by the number N209.

The Route nationale 9 B , N 9 B or RN 9 B , was a French national road and at the same time a branch of the N 9.

The national road was established in 1933 and initially led from Sigean, where it branched off from the N 9, directly south to Les-Cabanes-de-Lapalme. For this purpose, the Départementstrasse Ic66 (chemin de Intérêt commun) of the Département Aude was upgraded. The length was 8 kilometers.

In 1945 this route was taken over by the national road N9 and the N 9 B was relocated to the old route of the N 9 between Sigean and Port-la-Nouvelle. This made the length 5.5 kilometers.

In 1973, then downgrading to D 9 B .

As a result, the road received the status of a national road again in 1984 and was classified under the road number N 139 until 2006 .

In 2006 there was another downgrade to Département-Straße .

The Route nationale 9 C , N 9 C or RN 9 C for short , was a French national road and from 1933 to 1973 a side branch of the N 9, which branched off from this at Rivesaltes and ran to Le Barcarès. The length was 12 kilometers.

In 1973 it was completely downgraded to Département Street D 90. In the meantime, part of this road has been rededicated as the D 83 expressway.

N 9d

The Route nationale 9 D , N 9 D or RN 9 D for short , was created in 1970 from a section of National Road 9 that ran south from National Road 608 in Clermont-l'Hérault to the confluence of the newly created eastern bypass with the N 9 which this was relocated. It has had the number D 909 D since 1973 .

N139

The number N139 was temporarily assigned for side branches of the N9. The first existed from 1976 to 2006 as the compound of N9 with junction 42 of the A9 - Today D139 and the second existed from 1984 as again stepped-N9 B .

N209

The N209 is a branch of the N9 and the second successor to the Route nationale 9bis . It existed from 1978 between Gannat and Varennes-sur-Allier. In 2007 it was graduated between Gannat and Creuzier-le-Neuf, so that it has no longer had a connection to the N9.

N2009

The N2009 was to 2006 in several places a side branch of the N9, which was created in each case when the N9 was moved to a parallel highway. The longest was built south of Millau, where the N9 formed the forerunner for the A75 until 1992.
