Excavations carried out by INRAP ( Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives ) in 2000 revealed the importance of Clermont during the Roman period. The core settlement was about five to six hectares in size, surrounded by an outer settlement zone of twelve hectares. Among other things, the remains of a bathing facility were excavated.
The city used to be called Clermont-Lodève. For the economy of the city, among other things, the cloth manufacture played a role, which used the water of the Dourbie for the production.
