Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers is located about 20 km north of Montpellier on the Terrieu River .
history
The area of Saint-Mathieu-de-Tréviers was already populated in prehistoric times, when Neanderthals 55,000 BC. Used the cave of Hortus at the foot of the cliff of the same name. The Château du Lébous is a historic site from the 24th century BC. Chr.
The name of the village was first mentioned in a document in 978. Count Melgueil (Mauguio) built the Château de Montferrand in 1090 . In 1215 the county of Melgueil passed into the hands of the Bishop of Maguelone. Forty years later, the bishop founded the Free Republic of Matelles. In 1574 the Calvinists took the castle and caused great damage to the village. During the Huguenot rebellion of 1622, the Château de Montferrand was unsuccessfully besieged by the Catholic troops of Henri II. De Montmorency .
