Octon [ ok.tɔ ] ( Occitan: Auton ) is a French commune in the Hérault department in the region of Occitania . It has 527 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) on an area of approx. 22 km².
geography
Octon is located about 60 km from the Mediterranean in the last foothills of the Massif Central in Languedoc. The village lies in a bushland with vineyards on the Lac du Salagou reservoir . This is endowed by the Salagou River , which runs along the southern municipal boundary. The landscape is characterized by the red rocks ( les ruffes ), the hills are remnants of old lava flows . The Mediterranean climate means mild winters and hot, dry summers. Autumn is a time of heavy rainfall.
