M. in the old cultural landscape of the Languedoc ; the mountains Pic Saint-Loup and Hortus are within sight. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture , the population fell continuously in the 20th century to the lows of the 1960s to 1980s. Due to the relative proximity to Montpellier and the significantly lower property prices in the country, an increase in the population has been recorded again in the last few decades.

economy

For centuries, the inhabitants of the community lived on agriculture as a self-sufficient source (grain, wine, vegetables, cheese); only the city of Montpellier came into question as a market place for cheese products, salted meat, etc. because of its short distance . Viticulture is still important, but tourism has played an increasingly important role in the municipality's economic life since the 1960s.

history

In the vicinity of the village there are several Neolithic dolmens, including the already badly damaged Dolmen de la Caumette or the Dolmen du Lamalou in the neighboring municipality of Rouet . In the 11th or 12th century a castle ( château ) was built, which was later rebuilt and enlarged several times. The place developed in their immediate vicinity.

Attractions

  • The Château de Londres is an impressive building with mediaeval echoes ( defensive towers and battlements ), which, however, dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries in its current form. It is privately owned, recognized as a Monument historique in 1978 and extensively restored in the 1990s.
  • The former castle chapel and today's parish church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and dates from the 12th century. The architecturally unusual building is divided into two parts; the two components show differently well-hewn stone material and different vaulting techniques ( groin vault in the southern part; barrel vault in the northern part). The building was already classified as a monument historique in 1925 .
