In the 19th century, the community, which was divided into several hamlets ( hameaux ) and individual farmsteads, had over 300 inhabitants at times. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants fell continuously in the 20th century to the lows of the 1950s to 1970s. Due to the relative proximity to the city of Montpellier, the population of the municipality has increased significantly again in the last few decades.
economy
For centuries, the inhabitants of the community lived on agriculture as a self-sufficient source (grain, wine, vegetables, cheese); only the city of Montpellier came into question as a market place for cheese products, salted meat, etc. because of its relative proximity . Viticulture is still of great importance, but since the 1960s tourism has also played an important role in the economic life of the municipality in the form of holiday homes ( gîtes ).
history
There is evidence of a church in Château-de-Londres in the 12th century . However, during the French Revolution , the place was renamed Mas-de-Londres. The Catalan name Lo Castèl recalls the old place name.
Attractions
- The small parish church of Saint-Gérard was built in the early 12th century with a polygonal broken apse ; It was first mentioned in 1146. The lack of buttresses suggests that the building was not originally vaulted, but only had a wooden roof structure . Two chapel extensions from the 16th and 17th centuries give the visual impression of a transept . The current bell gable ( clocher mur ) seems to have replaced an older one. The low vault inside can be used as a further indication for subsequent structural changes. The small church building has been classified as a monument historique since 1981 .
- There are no more traces of the former castle ( castel ) to be seen.
